GOP CHAIR: Some Republicans Want Spiker Out

The head of the Republican Party of Iowa has been on the job for just 19-months and some Iowa Republicans already want him out.

The Appanoose County Republican Party has already approved a resolution calling for chairman A.J. Spiker to resign.

Much of the disagreement stems from Spiker?s decision to move the 2014 state convention from June to July.

Governor Branstad says the convention should remain in June.

When asked if Spiker should resign, Branstad told Radio Iowa, ?I?m not going to take a position on that.? I think that?s up to individual Republicans to decide who they think is the appropriate leader for their party.?

Republican insider Doug Gross also has his doubts about a Spiker resignation.

Gross, the 2002 GOP gubernatorial nominee, speculates Spiker?s support of moving the state convention is helping rally the party against the idea.

?I don?t know how you can damage him when he?s not effective, so I don?t see him resigning, I don?t see him getting pushed out. I see him as sort of motivating a lot of mainstream Republicans to get involved again as a result next year at the state convention,? speculates Gross.

?I think there?ll probably be some new leadership.?

The Iowa Republican?s state central committee is scheduled to meet Monday evening and could vote to move the state convention back to June.
