Jason Pominville, Matt Ellis and Christian Ehrhoff also scored in the first period for the Sabres, who snapped a three-game skid to improve to 4-6-2 in their last 12 games. Ryan Miller, making his sixth straight start, finished with 20 saves.

NFL: Rams like aggressive play of Harvey Dahl

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Rams are liking the aggressive play they are getting from right tackle Harvey Dahl.

Even if it sometimes comes at a price.

The former Fallon and Wolf Pack standout who in his first season with the Rams was called for holding during Sunday's loss to the Bengals with his team 13-6 at the time.

He got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, too, perhaps because he used a profanity that was picked up on the microphone of referee Jerome Boger. It was just a matter of time before the play -- with the audio -- wound up on YouTube.

Dahl said the incident was atypical for him although he is known for his physical style of play. And the Rams (2-12) need every spark they can get this season with a visit to Pittsburgh (10-4) today up next.

"I learned a lesson. You can't say anything to the refs. That's my fault," Dahl said Thursday. "That was frustration there. I made a bad situation worse. Obviously, you've got to stay composed there. I hurt my team. I didn't know the microphone was on."

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo did not delve into the correctness of the call on Dahl.

"I'm going to have to give it the old, 'No comment,'" Spagnuolo said.

Dahl has had a solid season. He started the first 11 games at right guard before sliding over to right tackle the past four weeks. He started 43 games at right guard for Atlanta before coming to St. Louis.

The Rams have gotten what they wanted this year from Dahl, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said.

"When we got Harvey, we thought we were going to get a guy that was going to add some toughness," McDaniels said. "He's a great worker. He's a great example for what we want our young guys to see. He's been so unselfish with his role and what we've asked of him this year that I couldn't say enough good things about him. (I'm) real glad to have him on our football team."

Running back Steven Jackson agreed.

"He brings that attitude, that edge that you want upfront out of your guys," Jackson said. "He's pretty athletic and versatile that he can play two positions. You can see why he was really sought after in free agency."

Dahl moved to tackle when Jason Smith suffered a concussion against Dallas.

"It's a challenge," Dahl said of the move. "It's different technique. I feel like it's going all right. I think it's working out well. To help out and doing what the team needs is important. They ran it by me and I was open to it."

That versatility has caught Spagnuolo's eye.

"It's not easy to go from guard to tackle," Spagnuolo said. "With some of the people you see out on the edge there, he's going to be challenged again this week and yet I think he functions really well. That's a credit to him. I'm sure glad we've got him and I like the kind of guy he is. He's good for our football team and he's been really key with all the injuries we've had to be able to put him out there at right tackle."

While Dahl has played well at tackle, Spagnuolo said he hasn't pondered making it permanent.

"I'm not sure I've even thought that way yet," Spagnuolo said. "But I know one thing, it's nice to have a guy that can do both. It really is, that's good to have."

US appears to soften ban on online betting (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration appears to have softened a U.S. ban on Internet gambling.

In a legal opinion posted Friday, the Justice Department said online betting unrelated to sporting events falls outside the reach of federal law.

The U.S. government has long considered such gambling illegal when it crosses state lines.

The gambling industry is worth billions worldwide but many operators are based overseas. Washington has cracked down on some of them, and a 2006 law forbade financial institutions from processing funds for most online wagering.

Because of the difficulty in enforcing age and other requirements, the issue has divided lawmakers and the industry. But several states have been studying plans for web betting within states.

The opinion letter was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Doctors: Boy shot outside Texas school lost kidney

(AP)? McALLEN, Texas ? A 14-year-old Texas boy shot while trying out for his school basketball team lost a kidney but should recover to live a normal life, his doctors said.

Edson Amaro sustained massive injuries earlier this month when he and Nicholas Tijerina were shot outside Harwell Middle School near Edinburg in South Texas. The boys were in a parking lot that had been converted into a temporary basketball court.

Doctors at Rio Grande Regional Hospital discussed Edson's condition during a news conference Wednesday.

Edson was shot in the back and the bullet went through a large vein, his stomach, his liver and his right kidney, said Dr. Carlos Garcia-Cantu, director of trauma services at the hospital. The kidney was removed in a five-hour surgery, but Edson is recovering and could make it home for the holidays, he said.

"I know my son Edson has a long recovery road ahead of him, but in the meantime I am happy he is recovering nicely and will look forward to the possibility of spending the holidays at home," Edson's father, Pedro Amaro, said in a statement released to the media Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Nicholas has been unable to move his legs. His doctor said last week that he has been stable and talking, but that it's too soon to know the lasting effects of the shooting. The bullet entered the lower portion of Nicholas' chest under his right arm, damaging the lower portion of his lung. It went through the right half of his liver and through one of the bones of his spine before lodging in the soft tissue of his back.

About 50 students were trying out for the middle school basketball team when the shots rang out the afternoon of Dec. 12. Classes were out, but many children remained on the rural campus for extracurricular activities.

No charges have been filed in the shooting, but rifles have been seized from three men found on adjacent ranchland after the incident.

Investigators questioned the men, releasing two who had been practicing target shooting nearly a mile from the school.

The third man was an illegal immigrant with an assault rifle who was trespassing on the property, authorities said. He was kept in custody on charges of misdemeanor trespass and poaching.

Authorities are trying to determine which, if any, of the rifles fired the shots. Investigators were waiting for the results of ballistic testing on a bullet removed from the 14-year-old.

Earlier this week, a lawyer for the school district said authorities had previously responded to reports of gunfire around the middle school. She said they only confirmed that shots had been heard from afar. The school district contacted an adjacent landowner who said he would no longer allow hunting on the land.

Transformer Optimus Prime wants his name back, right now preferably

In a cunning bid to remind the adult world of its long-lost childhood, in which even the most vacuous fictional characters could somehow seem magical, Hasbro has suddenly decided to sue ASUS over its 'Transformer Prime' branding. It doesn't matter that the Transformer Prime really does transform -- you know, in real-life -- or that it exists in a non-competing market, or that the latest Transformers movie was a complete waste of everybody's time. Nope, Hasbro still feels the need to "aggressively protect its brands and products" from illusory enemies, and it's fully prepared to threaten ASUS with a sales injunction until some sort of conciliatory gesture appears on its bank statement. If this lawsuit takes hold -- please, not another Düsseldorf -- then we promise that our future children will never buy, watch or touch a single Hasbro product. Except maybe that R2-D2 version of Operation, which is pretty sweet.

Women's Response to Alcohol Suggests Need for Gender-Specific Treatment Programs

News | Health

A new study underscores that the physical consequences of alcoholism appear faster and are more severe for women than for men

Image: webphotographeer/iStockphoto

Alcohol abuse does its neurological damage more quickly in women than in men, new research suggests. The finding adds to a growing body of evidence that is prompting researchers to consider whether the time is ripe for single-gender treatment programs for alcohol-dependent women and men.

Over the past few decades scientists have observed a narrowing of the gender gap in alcohol dependence. In the 1980s the ratio of male to female alcohol dependence stood at roughly five males for every female, according to figures compiled by Shelly Greenfield, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. By 2002 the "dependence difference" had dropped to about 2.5 men for every woman. But although the gender gap in dependence may be closing, differences in the ways men and women respond to alcohol are emerging. Writing in the January 2012 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, principal investigator Claudia Fahlke from the Department of Psychology at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and her colleagues found that alcohol's ability to reduce serotonin neurotransmission, was "telescoped" in alcoholic women compared with their male counterparts. In other words, although the alcohol-dependent men and women in the study differed substantially in their mean duration of excessive drinking?four years for the women and 14 years for the men?both sexes showed similar patterns of reduced serotonin activity compared with controls. The researchers gauged serotonergic neurotransmission by measuring its response to citalopram, a drug that stalls serotonin molecules in the synaptic gap (as measured by the hormone prolactin's response to citalopram. This pattern of reduced serotonergic neurotransmission matters, because some of the alcohol-induced abnormalities were found in brain regions involved in judgment, self-control and emotional regulation.

Carla A. Green of the Kaiser Permanente Northwest Center for Health Research says the serotonin results were "consistent with findings of more severe physical consequences of alcohol consumption among women compared to men." Green, who is also associate professor of public health and prevention medicine and of psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, points out that women with addictions are more likely to suffer from associated mental health conditions. "Given the link between serotonin and depression, and the links between alcohol dependence and depression, this finding suggests one pathway in which alcohol dependence may lead to depression, and do so more quickly among women," she says.

Previous work on gender differences in alcohol dependence has shown that women get drunk on fewer drinks than men owing to a deficit of alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme in the stomach lining that breaks down booze. After two beers, women are more likely than men to exceed legal levels of alcohol in the bloodstream. (Women also develop cirrhosis of the liver more rapidly.) Research aimed specifically at the treatment needs of alcoholic women has long been spotty, however. To that end, a recent pilot study conducted by Greenfield demonstrated that a woman-centered approach could be as effective as a mixed-gender control group over the course of a 12-week study. More importantly, follow-ups at six months showed that women from the all-female recovery groups relapsed less often than women in the mixed group. In her all-female treatment groups, Greenfield discovered that women shared personal information more readily, and bonding behavior was more noticeable, particularly for less assertive women. Greenfield now has a larger group study in progress?all part of a recent explosion of research on women and alcohol.

Green, who collaborated with Greenfield on an earlier review of gender research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, says that "the most consistent, and, I'd argue, the most important finding in the literature is that it takes longer for women to enter treatment for similar severity of alcohol problems than it does for men." In general, women require medical treatment four years earlier than male problem drinkers, Greenfield suggests. In another study, Greenfield found that women tend to go to primary health care physicians rather than to specialty substance abuse programs for treatment, putting additional pressure on family doctors to diagnose and treat alcohol dependence in women as early as possible.

Timeline: A Look Back at the Iraq War (ContributorNetwork)

December 15, 2011, will remain forever as a great day in history for the United States, as it is the day that the war in Iraq officially ended, according to The Envoy. Today, at the Baghdad International Airport, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Lloyd Austin, the top United States Commander serving in Iraq, presided over the ceremonies that marked the ending of the war. The United States and many other countries who have been involved in this fight have sacrificed a lot since its beginning in 2003. Here is some more information about those sacrifices and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

* After the 9/11 attacks, Iraq was firmly on President George W. Bush's radar as a country that not only was becoming more dangerous with their supposed weapons of mass destruction but with their alleged ties to terrorist groups like Al-Qaida who were responsible for the 9/11 attacks, according to History.com.

* On November 8, 2002, UN Security Council Resolution 1441 stated that Iraq readmit weapons inspectors and comply.

* Even though it seemed as Iraq did comply with the UN Security Resolutions, the U.S. gave an ultimatum to Saddam Hussein telling him to leave Iraq within forty eight hours or the U.S. would be invading.

* On March 20, 2003, after Hussein refused to leave, the U.S. and British troops launched an airstrike and an attack by land from Kuwait on the country.

* Baghdad was won over by the U.S. led forces on April 9, 2003, according to CBS News.

* On May 1, 2003, President George W. Bush, aboard a USS Abraham Lincoln declares combat operations in Iraq over, according to BBC News.

* The U.S. led the occupation of the country with minimal losses until sectarian violence grew throughout Iraq.

* While the U.S. seemed to be winning the war, one of the things that they were missing from their victory was capturing Saddam Hussein. But on December 13, 2003, Saddam was captured in Tikrit, Iraq in a farmhouse, according to The Washington Post.

* Saddam is tried by an Iraqi court and found guilty of crimes against humanity specifically for the 1982 killings of 148 people, and is sentenced to death by hanging. He is executed in December 2006, according to MSNBC.

* Even though Hussein has been captured, tried, and executed, the Iraq War is increasingly bloody; with the number of U.S. troops killed reaching 3,000 in December 2006.

* A surge of 20,000 additional U.S. troops is announced in January 2007.

* The fighting continues, but the U.S. and Iraq ratify an agreement on December 8, 2008 that says that the U.S. will leave the country by the end of 2011.

* The war is officially declared over on December 15, 2011.

* 4,483 Americans were killed during the war in Iraq, according to antiwar.com.

* 100,000 Iraqi civilians are estimated to have been killed during the war, according to About.com.

* The total cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom is estimated to be around $806 billion, according to The Congressional Research Service.

N. Korea's heir apparent's hair apparent as fashion hit

KCNA via Reuters

Kim Jong-un, center, son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il (not pictured) visits Mokran Video Company in Pyongyang in this official KCNA news agency photo
showing the heir apparent's slicked-back, high-sided haircut, which is a fashion hit in Pyongyang.

By Reuters

North Korean heir-apparent Kim Jong-un's slicked-back, high-sided haircut is a fashion hit in Pyongyang where young men are apparently queueing up for a similar cut.

Kim, believed to be in his late 20s and known as the "Young General," is packaged to look like his late grandfather, the secretive state's founder, Kim Il-sung.

The chubby youngest son of the current leader, Kim Jong-il, slicks his hair back at the top, and has it trimmed to the scalp to about an inch above the ears.

Completing the Kim Il-sung look, which experts say is designed to help win over the public's support for dynastic succession, the young Kim wears dark Mao-style suits.

The young Kim's haircut is dubbed a "youth" or "ambition" hairstyle in North Korea, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper has reported.

Earlier this week, North Korean state news agency KCNA quoted barber An Su-gil as saying the short-cut, medium-cut and square-cut hairstyles are now popular among young men.

North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun wrote in September that neat and short hair for young people makes them "captivating."

"A young man with (an) ambitious high sided haircut looks so sobering and stylish," the paper added.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said that North Korean young men prefer short hairstyle for sanitary reasons, not just because they want to look neat and ambitious.

Kim Jong-un emerged as the reclusive North's leader-in-waiting last year when he was named a four-star general and given a prominent post within the ruling party.

This year he has regularly been photographed alongside his father during visits by foreign officials.

Genomic sequences of two iconic falconry birds -- Peregrine and Saker Falcons -- successfully decoded

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? A group of scientists from United Kingdom (UK), China and United Arab Emirates (UAE) jointly announced the complete sequencing of peregrine and saker falcons genomes at the 2nd International Festival of Falconry held in Al Ain, UAE. The study is a part of Falcon Genome Project, launched and funded by the Environment Agency -- Abu Dhabi (EAD) in this January. The results will enable biologists to better study the basic biology and genetics of falcons and provide new insights into understanding the origin and populations of these species.

Two particular species of birds, peregrine and saker falcons, are widespread but heavily exploited birds of prey that exhibit migratory habit and are popular hunting falcons commonly found in the country. In particular, the saker is the national bird of United Arab Emirate. In the past century, the two falcons have been listed as endangered species with population decline, caused by a wide range of factors including migration obstacles, environmental changes, habitat loss, use of pesticides (e.g. DDT, PCBs), among others. In the late 1990s, the peregrine has been successfully removed from the endangered species list through the increased recovery efforts, but the saker is still facing this challenge.

Since this January, researchers from UK, China and UAE have been working together to conduct the genomic studies of peregrine and saker falcons, aiming to identify the genome sequences of the two species and enhance their future conservation to face the unforeseen challenge of the rapid changing environments and human activities. Abu Dhabi's Falcon Hospital (ADFH) provided the blood samples collected from male specimens of peregrine and saker falcons, and BGI were responsible for sequencing these samples on its large-scale next-generation sequencing platforms and producing high-quality data output. The bioinformatics analysis is conducted by the scientists from the School of Biosciences, Cardiff University (UK) and BGI.

Dr. Ning Li, CEO of BGI Europe, said, "The complete genome sequencing of the two falcons will lay a solid scientific foundation for identifying the origin and populations of falcons and accelerating the selective breeding of high-quality varieties. We believe we will make more breakthroughs in this project to help researchers better protect these endangered species."

"This study will open the door to an unparalleled understanding of falcon biology and help us to manage and conserve wild falcon stocks in the future" said Dr Andrew Dixon, Head of Research at International Wildlife Consultants Ltd (IWC).

Swiss charge 3 men in nuclear smuggling case (AP)

GENEVA ? Three Swiss engineers ? a father and his two sons ? have been charged with breaking arms export laws by aiding a Pakistani-led nuclear smuggling ring that supplied Libya's atomic weapons program, prosecutors said Tuesday. The mens' formal indictment follows almost a decade of politically-charged investigation that lifted the veil on one of the most successful international intelligence operations to stop nuclear proliferation to rogue states.

Urs Tinner, 46, his brother Marco, 43, and their father Friedrich, 74, are suspected of providing technology and know-how to the nuclear smuggling network of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the architect of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program, the federal prosecutors office in Bern said in a statement.

"Based on the results of the inquiries, offenses of forgery, money laundering and pornography ? in the case of one person only ? were investigated," prosecutors said. "The criminal proceedings were further expanded to include a fourth person suspected of offenses against the War Material Act, although this person played only a subordinate role."

Prosecutors said the Tinners have agreed to request a shortened legal procedure that could ensure politically sensitive aspects of the investigation aren't discussed in court. The unidentified fourth defendant will be charged in separate legal proceedings with breaking Swiss arms exports laws, prosecutors said.

The Tinners, from eastern Switzerland, have been under investigation by Swiss authorities for almost a decade over their involvement in the Khan smuggling ring. Khan sold key equipment such as centrifuges for uranium enrichment to various countries until his operation was disrupted in 2003.

Urs Tinner, who was released on bail in December 2008 after almost five years in investigative detention, claimed in a 2009 interview with Swiss TV station SF1 that he had tipped off U.S. intelligence about a delivery of centrifuge parts meant for Libya's nuclear weapons program.

The shipment was seized at the Italian port of Taranto in 2003, forcing Libya to admit and eventually renounce its efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.

The CIA has declined to comment on the Tinner case. But the agency has said in the past that "the disruption of the A.Q. Khan network was a genuine intelligence success, one in which the CIA played a key role."

A book by U.S. investigative reporters Douglas Frantz and Catherine Collins, titled "The Nuclear Jihadist" and based on interviews with sources in the U.S. intelligence community, backs Urs Tinner's claim that he was recruited by the CIA as early as 2000.

Swiss prosecutors said in their statement Tuesday that the question of the Tinners' cooperation with the CIA remained unresolved, because the Swiss government denied a request to open a criminal investigation into the issue.

In 2007, the Swiss government ordered evidence in the case destroyed, citing national security concerns. The decision prompted outrage in Switzerland and accusations the government had acted under pressure from Washington.

Prosecutors said they were able to recover copies of some of the files, but others ? including all electronic records ? have been "definitively lost."

New York to raise taxes on the rich. Is it a blueprint for Congress?

Bipartisan leaders in New York State agreed to a plan to raise taxes on the rich. The plan is broadly similar to similar ideas discussed ? but rejected ? by Congress.

In the state that's home to Wall Street, taxes on the rich are about to go up.

That's the hot-button headline from a budget deal announced Tuesday by?bipartisan leaders in New York State.

The plan can be viewed in some ways as a microcosm of the larger?debate in Washington over national finances. In both cases, a?Democratic chief executive and a divided legislature face difficult?budget deficits, a still-weak economy, and a public that doesn't want?to see taxes go up.

A difference: New York politicians found a path of bipartisan?compromise, including plans to collect some new tax revenue ? from the?state's highest earners ? as well as to cut spending. In Washington,?efforts to reach such an accord have failed so far.

"Our state government has come together in a bipartisan manner to?create jobs, grow our economy and, at the same time enact a fair tax?plan that cuts taxes for the middle class," Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said?in a statement announcing the budget deal. "This would be lowest tax?rate for middle class families in 58 years."

Of course, politicians are prone to spin their achievements in the?most positive light, and it remains to be seen whether a deal designed?to raise $2 billion in new tax revenue will simultaneously mend the?budget and invigorate economic activity in New York.

The plan also still needs approval from the full state Senate and Assembly.

But New York State is following a script that many finance experts?urge for the nation as well: streamline spending, reduce tax rates,?and close loopholes so that more tax revenue can come in. Those?elements are hallmarks, for example, of the bipartisan Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction commission that made recommendations to President Obama last year.

New York State's Senate leader, a Republican, echoed Governor Cuomo's?praise for the approach.

"This year, working in a bipartisan manner, we've accomplished some?very important things for the people of this State ? including?eliminating a $10 billion deficit, bringing spending under control and?capping property taxes," majority leader Dean Skelos said. He said the?new tax reforms would "create thousands of new private sector jobs,?and begin to turn our economy around."

Under the plan, substantial new tax revenue would come from households?earning more than $300,000 a year, even as tax rates fall for them and for?others.

The new tax rates would range from 6.45 percent (for households with annual incomes of $40,000 to $150,000) to 6.85 percent (for households with?incomes of $300,000 to $2 million). Above the $2 million mark, the tax?rate would jump significantly higher, to 8.82 percent.

But again, all those tax rates would be lower than current rates. In?terms of how much tax households actually owe, taxes would rise for?the rich and fall for other groups. And overall, the state would take?in $2 billion more in revenue.

Similarly, the Bowles-Simpson plan called for a tax revenue boost ? something opposed by Republican lawmakers in Congress who have signed a no-hike pledge?championed by lobbyist Grover Norquist. On the spending side, it?called for tough choices on entitlements like Social Security, opposed?by many congressional Democrats. And tax reform (simplifying the code and lowering?tax rates) was used as a sweetener designed to make the plan more?politically palatable and more efficient for both tax collection and?economic growth.

"This job-creating economic plan defies the political gridlock that?has paralyzed Washington," Cuomo said.

The tax-hike plan comes as New York is one of a handful of states?struggling to close a budget gap for its current fiscal year. In?another one of these states, California, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) is?seeking approval for tax hikes.

Scott's Antarctic papers on show

The exhibition has previously unseen archive material of the expedition

Artefacts from Captain Scott's ill-fated Antarctic expedition are on show together for the first time in the UK.

The Cambridge University Polar Museum exhibition includes Scott's last journal, on loan from the British Library, and many items which have never been on public display.

These include scientist Edward Wilson's sketchbook, a hand-produced newspaper, and a sledge made by Lt Edward Evans.

These Rough Notes: Capt Scott's Last Expedition is on show until 5 May.

Many of the items from the 1910-1913 British Antarctic Expedition, also known as the Terra Nova expedition, are only usually available to researchers.

'Hardihood and endurance'

Capt Robert Falcon Scott's team included Wilson, Evans, Henry Bowers and Lawrence Oates.

The party died as they tried to return to base, after discovering that Norwegian rival Roald Amundsen had beaten them to the South Pole.

One of the items on display is a rarely-seen fragile volume of Bowers' second journal, which has been repaired especially for the exhibition.

Museum curator Kay Smith described the collection as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to view the writings, not only of the expedition leaders, but the "forgotten voices" of other Terra Nova crew and shore party members.

"We're not just talking about the race to the pole here," she said.

"We're talking about an entire crew of men, each telling their own story in their own way, and perhaps a different story from those you're already familiar with.

"Some of [these items] are so fragile and valuable that they probably won't go on display again for another 100 years."

The exhibition takes its title from Scott's message to the public written at the end of his journal, shortly before his death.

On 29 March, 1912, he wrote: "Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman.

"These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale, but surely, surely, a great rich country like ours will see that those who are dependent on us are properly provided for."

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Bollywood star Dev Anand, a charismatic and flamboyant Indian film fixture for more than a half-century, has died of a heart attack in London, his family said Sunday. He was 88.

Famed for his roles in dozens of movies, including "Jewel Thief" and "Guide," the veteran actor, director and producer was working up to the last minute, with a new script in the works.

Anand lived and died on "his own terms," his nephew and renowned film director Shekhar Kapur said in a posting on Twitter. "He was working one minute. Sat down and smiled. And was gone the next. So much to learn."

Anand died of a heart attack Saturday night in a hotel in London, where he had gone recently for a medical checkup, the family said.

India's prime minister joined Indian film stars and officials in lauding Anand's achievements and expressing sorrow for his death.

"Dev Anand was a great artist who entertained generations of cinema lovers over five decades," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a statement. "He was an embodiment of long passion for acting and filmmaking. I join millions of his fans in mourning his death."

Born on Sept. 26, 1923, as the son of a Punjab lawyer, Anand studied English literature and law, eventually moving in his early 20s to India's film capital of Mumbai, then called Bombay, where he pursued a love of acting.

Known for his good looks, melodious voice and success in romantic leads, Anand was considered a superstar within just a few years of his 1946 screen debut in the Hindi-language film "Hum Ek Hain."

Others in his family followed, with his brothers Chetan and Vijay also winning praise as film producers, screenwriters and directors.

Dev Anand also began producing in 1949, and made his directorial debut in 1971 with the popular hippie cult film "Hare Rama Hare Krishna."

Never giving up the career, Anand released his latest film, "Chargesheet," just a few months ago and was reportedly working on another script when he died.

On his birthday in September, the upbeat actor told the Press Trust of India that he still had more to offer.

"My life is the same, and I am at a beautiful stage at 88," he reportedly said in the interview. "I am as excited as I was in my 20s. I have so many things to do," including a sequel to his 1971 film that he had titled "Hare Rama Hare Krishna Aaj."

Anand was given several prizes during his career, including lifetime achievement awards by Filmfare in 1993 and Screen Videocon in 1996. His 2007 memoirs, titled "Romancing With Life," underlined his belief in making films that were socially relevant.

Also known for social work, Anand dabbled in politics in the 1970s, launching a short-lived political party and leading other film stars in opposing then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's "Emergency" regime, which gave her the power to rule by decree.

"With his death, an era has come to an end. For a career spanning more than five decades, Dev Anand gave us films which will stay entrenched in our minds for years on," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said in a statement carried by Press Trust of India. "He was truly a multifaceted performer as an actor, director and producer."

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan said in a posting on Twitter that Anand's death "leaves a void never perhaps to be filled again."

Prize-winning British-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie lamented in a post: "I grew up watching your films. Sorry to say goodbye."

Anand's family plans to cremate his body in London on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Wrestler vs. wrestler showdown on Fox: Sonnen and Munoz official for Jan. 28

Chael Sonnen did all he could to throw the media and fan off the scent, but it turns out initial reports that the mouthy middleweight would be facing Mark Munoz were true. Sonnen and Munoz have been booked as the co-main event for the Jan. 28 in Chicago.

Just a few minutes ago, the UFC sent out a UFC of Fox 2 press conference advisory:

The Ultimate Fighting Championship? announced today that it will host a press conference at 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at the United Center in Chicago.?UFC President Dana White will discuss the UFC? on FOX event scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at United Center.

In the night's main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans battles the unbeaten Phil Davis to determine the next challenger to the 205-pound title. Plus, in the night's co-feature, controversial middleweight contender Chael Sonnen takes on "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" Mark Munoz in a bout that will decide which fighter gets the next crack at champion Anderson Silva.

With the event at the massive United Center, the UFC decided to go with an unusually low set of ticket prices:

Tickets for UFC? on FOX are priced at $250, $150, $100, $75, $50, and $40, and go on sale to the public on Friday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. CT. Tickets will be available at all Ticketmaster locations, online at ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the United Center Box Office.

Sonnen is coming off a dominant October win over Brian Stann at UFC 136. He the only fighter to give UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva a real challenge over the last six years when he took the champ to the brink before losing via submission in the fifth round at UFC 117.

Munoz, a national champion wrestler at Oklahoma State, has plowed through the UFC middleweight division with a 7-1 mark. Sonnen was a collegiate wrestling star at Oregon and went onto a decorate career internationally on the Greco-Roman grappling scene.

Italian Players Union president Damiano Tommasi tells athletes to stay in the closet

by Cyd Zeigler jr..

Yet another example how European soccer is one of the most homophobic corners of the sports world. Italian Players Union president Damiano Tommasi demonstrated an incredibly shallow understanding and compassion for living as a gay person when he said in an interview that gay athletes should stay in the closet, and that there is no need for anyone to ever come out to be happy. Some of the little gems from his interview, as reported on RawStory:

It?s to be discouraged. The fact of being identified or singled out as ?the one who is?, regardless of your profession, whether journalist, footballer or politician, I don?t think it would be an advisable path to take.

Homosexuality is still a taboo in football in the sense that there is a different kind of cohabitation to other professions.

But there is the risk that something intimate would then become uncontrolled public discussion. ?

I don?t think that people don?t come out in football due to fear but rather that they don?t do so for personal reasons. I don?t think there?s any need to express your sexual preferences in order to work or live in a civil manner with absolute tranquility.

While it may seem that Tommasi is simply expressing how he sees the state of soccer, let me give you an alternative way he could have expressed himself:

There is homophobia in football, but I for one will stand with anyone against it. Athletes should be able to come out freely and be themselves. And if a player wants to come out in soccer, I will stand by him and support him.

Big difference, right? Both express that there is homophobia in soccer; But one virtually defends it while the other stands against it. Unfortunately, Tommasi decided to stand by the homophobia and put the onus of dealing with it on closeted athletes.

Obama promotes energy efficiency, hosts tribes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama will tour a downtown Washington office building Friday and announce a $4 billion effort to increase the energy efficiency of government and private sector buildings.

The owners of the building on Connecticut Avenue have agreed to make it more energy efficient under the president's plan.

The proposal, to be announced by Obama and former President Bill Clinton, would upgrade buildings over the next two years with a goal of improving energy performance by 20 percent by 2020.

Later, Obama will host the White House Tribal Nations Conference at the Interior Department. It's part of the president's ongoing outreach to the American people. Leaders from 565 federally recognized tribes will have the opportunity to interact directly with Obama and representatives of his administration.

Second Afghan security handover starts (Reuters)

CHARIKAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) ? Foreign troops began the second stage of a security handover that aims to put Afghans in charge of the whole country by the end of 2014 with a ceremony on Thursday in a small town on the plains north of Kabul.

This new phase of a years-long transfer program will extend Afghan security coverage to half the population, and move beyond the largely showpiece areas chosen for the first stage.

Being able to say 50 percent of Afghans rely on their own police and army for security is a key milestone for the government's Western backers, who will attend a major conference on Afghanistan's future in Germany next week.

With an economic crisis gripping Europe, smaller budgets in the U.S. and electorates weary of a decade-long war, politicians are keen to show progress in leaving Afghanistan -- without letting the country descend into civil war.

All foreign combat troops will leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, with the rapidly expanding Afghan police and army assuming full security responsibility in their place.

At a handover event in Charikar in Parwan province, little over an hour's drive from the capital Kabul, U.S. troops ceremonially folded the American flag before passing control to their darker-uniformed Afghan counterparts.

"We have been monitoring areas in the first tranche (of transition) and note that violence has decreased, and in some areas has decreased significantly," said the commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. troops in Afghanistan, General John Allen.

He was speaking in the grounds of the Parwan provincial governor's bombed-out compound, where a suicide attack in August killed a dozen people. All but two districts of Parwan will be handed over in this tranche.

Entire provinces where the handover formally begins this week are Balkh, Takhar and Samangan in the north, central province Daikondi, Nimroz in the south, and Kabul.

Districts within Helmand, Herat, Ghazni and other provinces will also be passed into Afghan control, ISAF said.

"For these areas and all the others in the second tranche, we will see the patchwork become whole ... as pieces of Afghanistan are knitted together again by Afghan hands," Allen said.

On December 5, representatives of 85 countries will meet in the former German capital of Bonn to discuss Afghanistan's future.

Not present, however, will be Pakistan, neighbor of Afghanistan and key to regional stability, which pulled out in response to a NATO cross-border attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday Pakistan's decision to boycott the conference was "regrettable," but she hoped to secure Islamabad's cooperation in the future.

The U.S. Senate voted on Wednesday to require President Barack Obama to devise a plan for accelerating the pullout of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, signaling growing impatience in Congress with American involvement.

"Transition does not mean the international community is walking away from Afghanistan," U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker said at the event in Parwan.

Despite the presence of tens of thousands of Western forces in Afghanistan, the United Nations and other groups say violence is at its worst since U.S.-led Afghan forces toppled the Taliban from power in late 2001.

NATO-led forces say they have seen a decline over recent months in attacks launched by insurgents against their troops.

Spain opens against Italy; England faces France

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

updated 1:30 p.m. ET Dec. 2, 2011

KIEV, Ukraine - Spain will begin the defense of its European Championship title against Italy on June 10 and then meet Ireland and Croatia in first-round Group C, which will be based in Poland.

England, which has never won the tournament, was drawn Friday into Group D and will play France, Sweden and co-host Ukraine.

The Netherlands, also based in Ukraine, opens what appears to be a difficult Group B against Denmark, then meets Germany and Portugal.

Poland hosts Greece in the tournament opener on June 8, then plays Russia and the Czech Republic in Group A. which many see as the weakest group.

The final of the 16-national tournament is July 1 in Kiev.

Expected large traveling fan groups from Germany and the Netherlands could have logistical challenges with their teams playing in Ukraine.

Even before the draw, England committed to a base hotel in Krakow, Poland.

Spain, which also won in 1964, is seeking to become the first repeat champion. The Furia Roja also are the defending World Cup champions.
