I finally finished reading Gretchen Rubin?s The Happiness Project.?It took me about a month longer than it should?ve ? mostly because I took a month off from reading anything happiness related. A few days ago, I finally picked up the book again, mostly out of pure stubbornness of needing to finish the book rather than my desire to embrace happiness again.

To be honest, I picked up the book randomly at Costco because it was sitting next to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet?s Nest?and since I was buying The Girl?I figured I?d buy the book next to it with a pretty blue cover. I knew nothing about it and didn?t even realize that the reason her name seemed so familiar was because I had actually spent a summer uploading various blog posts from her onto Intent.com. And really, I was also just drawn to the title.

So I started the book expecting to like it. And then I actually didn?t like it. And then I decided to just embrace the book as it is and I would say that when I closed the book an hour ago, I was more or less satisfied with what I read.

My initial dislike for the book can probably be narrowed down to the fact that I was expecting an Eat, Pray, Love?sort of book, but instead got a New York lawyer-turned-writer who really liked to quote famous people and laundry list studies related to happiness.

I also didn?t feel a lot of ?reflection? being done on her side. While I knew that the point of her book was to tackle every day things in life, she did seem to do a lot of nagging and criticism throughout the book. Thankfully, 250 pages in, she finally recognized the demons in herself and realized she needed to change. This may have saved the whole book for me. It is also slightly ironic that she did not seem to get to the nagging and criticism piece until November ? my birthday month.

Alas.

That said, I suppose Rubin?s take on happiness and her life was a somewhat refreshing break from the Deepak Chopra and Gangaji books that I?ve been having a hard time concentrating on lately. And let me remind you that by the end of the book, I actually enjoyed her book.

There are a few things that I think I can take from this book (this is when I am glad that I am disgustingly reflective by nature):

1.) It is easy to be heavy: hard to be light

Rubin is reminded of this quote from G. K. Chesterton when she realizes how much easier it is to criticize, be unhappy, and be negative than it is to appear happy. My mother would probably argue that I am a walking billboard for this statement. In truth, I don?t actually enjoy being sad or negative, and I don?t like it when other people are either ? hence my recent physical move in the workplace. I didn?t enjoy the criticism and negativity over my shoulders. So I left.

On a similar note, teaching is probably a weird affirmation of this quote. It is easy to yell at or criticize my students for the bad work that they had done, or the lack of work all together. It is harder to try to joke around with a 14 year old?s sense of humor and easier to scoff at their immaturity.

It is easy to be heavy, and by god do I know it. It is hard to be light, and do I know this as well. But hard does not mean impossible. So recognize that it is hard, and keep trying.

I think I should have that last paragraph tattooed on to my forehead.

2.) Apparently, by definition, I am actually neurotic.

Okay, so maybe not the most accurate of statements. Nonetheless, Rubin finds that the definition of ?neurotic? is something along the lines of people who have ?very strong negative reactions ? fear anxiety, shame, guilt, disgust, sadness ? very often directed at themselves? (pg. 265) By this definition, I think I?ve been neurotic since I turned 11 years old.

3.) To be happy, you need to consider feeling good, feeling bad, and feeling right, in an atmosphere for growth.

I remember in January of 2010, after a relatively emotionally tumultuous 2008 and 2009, I made the conscious decision to be happier ? my own happiness project without labeling it as such and not knowing Rubin?s book existed (it was published in 2009). This meant taking a class that I was interested in even if it didn?t really count toward anything for graduation, saying yes to adventurous weekend expeditions that I usually would have said no to (basically ?say yes?), reaching out to important friends, and concentrating on myself. The results were immediate ? I was intellectually stimulated by my Asian-American literature class, enjoyed Sunday morning hikes and museum hopping in the city (great pictures!), got to catch up with friends that I hadn?t talked to in a while, and got work done.

Along the way, I also got to a point where I could really let myself embody the idea, ?love and be loved.? I finally stopped resisting what was blatantly in front of my face and to let myself be loved. And sure enough, I found love.

For the first time in a while, I was happy with where I was.

Here was strong evidence that my own happiness project, that was?unknowingly?quite similar to Rubin?s, actually worked.

After I graduated, though, I slowly began to give away again to my neuroticism (look! I can label myself now!). I had no direction post-graduation, I went to live under the same roof as my mother (a decision that I knew would probably be emotionally unhealthy for me and ultimately was), and widened the physical distance between myself and all things that I loved by moving to the most physically isolated island in the world. I couldn?t go hiking with friends, museum hopping with my bosses, and most of all, I lost opportunities of shared experiences with the person that I loved.

There were moments when I tried to revive my happiness project. I said yes to a job that I knew would challenge me and force me to grow. I thought living with my mother again would reestablish our relationship post-divorce and I would develop a relationship with my new step dad. And I met some very interesting people through work.

That said, my level of happiness dropped immensely in the few months after college and moving back home. My family could feel it, my friends could sense it, and my biggest regret is that I forced the burden on to the person I love.

While I haven?t been able to snap out of this state of decline completely, somewhere along the way I realized that I needed to move and be near my friends and community. I needed to move away from home and be my own person.

I needed to stop asking others to carry my burden with me and to start acting happy so I could actually be happy. Consider feeling good.

Unfortunately, I realized this too late and have lost the person I love. Consider feeling bad.

And now I?m taking steps to move forward, albeit rather struggling through it, to the next chapter in my life. Roommates, new apartment, new city, and new job. Consider feeling right.

I know all of this will cultivate growth. I do not doubt that. But this is also why the lovely phrase ?easier said than done? exists.

I know that I have to start my happiness project again. And I know that there is no right time to start it. In fact, the right time is probably now.

But first, I think I need to get my life in order. I need to reconsider what feels good, what makes me feel pain, and what feels right.

I already know a few of the resolutions that will be included in my happiness project:
- eat more vegetables and fruit (thank goodness SF is very hippie)
- take a dance class (my body is screaming for this)
- volunteer to help youth (help others!)
- learn to flirt (I am absolutely horrible at this)

If anything, even if I didn?t always enjoy Rubin?s method of spewing happiness studies or how half of her chapters involved her taking excerpts from her comments on her blog (probably shaved off about 30 pages of the book if those weren?t there), perhaps the most important thing I will take from this book is a reminder that I need to get back on track.

In her ?The Happiness Project Manifesto? Rubin declares, ?you?re not happy unless you think you?re happy.? I don?t think I?m happy. That?s why I?m not happy. But I know that I was happy once, so I know that I?m capable of it.

Finally, in her last chapters, Rubin quotes Samuel Johnson in his reflection about resolutions: ?The need of doing, therefore, is pressing, since the time of doing is short.? In other words, just get off my ass and start that damn happiness project. Stop wallowing in sadness. Look forward to the next hour, the next week, the next month.

The time of doing is, indeed, short.

Summer is fast approaching, so here is our top ten list for making this summer your fitness and healthiest yet!

1. Set a goal. It could be to run a 5k or to lose a stone. Then break your goal down into smaller chunks, such as a weekly training plan or a weekly weight loss target. Write your goals and targets down and put them somewhere you can see it everyday as a reminder to keep going.

2. Share your goal with friends and family, you could even go one step further a post your goal on Facebook. This will make you accountable for your actions and you are more likely to not give up.

3. Join a club or fitness class. There are loads of free or community based fitness clubs or classes in your town, where likeminded people to you are hanging out and getting fit. If you mingle with people that are trying to achieve the same goal as you then you instantly have a new support network and also make new friends and potential business acquaintances.

4. Plan your meals. You wouldn't go on holiday without working out where you were going to stay, how to were going to get to your destination and what sort of currency you would need to take. Good nutrition planning is no different. Plan what you will eat for breakfast, lunch and tea, then work out what snacks you will have and bag them all up and take them to work with you. We love snacking on nuts which are easy to stick in a food bag and put in your top drawer of your desk. It will help you stay away from the vending machines when you get a sudden food craving.

5. Drink water, then some more, then some more! Your body is made up of 70% water so if you dehydrate the body it will not function correctly and you will begin to feel lethargic and run down. Take a 1 litre bottle of water to work with you and sip continuously throughout the day.

6. Get some fresh air. How many of you suffer from the 3pm energy slump? During your lunch break get outside for 20 minutes are fresh air and oxygen. Vitamin D from sunlight will help to alleviate the afternoon energy dip. Encourage someone from work to join you then you can catch up on the work gossip.

7.Ditch the energy vampires! If you are surrounded by negative people then they will eventually drain you of your energy and make you feel down, tired and negative yourself. Research has shown that you tend to take on the behaviours of the 5 people in your life that you spend most time with, therefore make sure those individuals are positive, ambitious, confident and happy people.

8. Try a new activity. Whether its hiking, biking or Zumba. Do something once a week that takes you out of your comfort zone and challenges your mind and your body. If you feel self conscious about trying new things alone then take a friend with you.

9. Take time to relax. In our busy lives there is very little time to actually relax and chill out, and watching the soaps does not count! Join a yoga or pilates group, lie on your bed and little to music, or read a book. Do something that you enjoy and is purely just about you.

10. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep is one of the most important aspects of a healthy body, without it the body cannot function correctly and you begin to feel run down. Don't go to bed directly after watching TV, try to leave 30 minutes before switching the television off and going to bed as your brain is still processing the images and information it has just seen. Make sure your bedroom is dark and not too hot so that the body can completely relax.

Don't try and do all of our top ten tips at once, implement them over a number of weeks and see a fresher, healthier and happier you!

The Blackmar Diemer Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3) is the Captain Jack Sparrow (from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies) of chess openings.

One observer?will cavil?that Captain Jack Sparrow is, "without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of," while?another will gush "That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen."

So, too, with the Blackmar Diemer Gambit as a chess opening. It inspires side-taking.

Of course, a?more objective, balanced, look at the BDG, say Christoph Scheerer's recent?The Blackmar-Diemer Gambit: A Modern Guide to a Fascinating Chess Opening from Everyman Chess, is bound to give a more nuanced assessment.

The link in the?above paragraph is useful: it connects to a review of Scheerer's book by Tim Sawyer, who has written a number of BDG texts himself. Further, the review is hosted at Tom's BDG Pages, by Tom Purser, a BDG player and?author himself, and past editor of the long-running "BDG World" magazine.?

(It's hard not to add the name of Tim McGrew to this duo, as he has written on any number of unorthodox openings ? including the BDG. Scheerer references all three in his book, although he makes the humorous slip of calling all of them "Tim". Sorry, Tom.)

In his review, Sawyer is impressed with Scheerer's extensive investigation of the Blackmar Diemer Gambit, noting

Scheerer lists a 3 page bibliography of major articles, books, cds, dvds, databases, periodicals and websites.

Only the excellent works from 2010 by Eric Jego and by Guido de Bouver are missing.

Which brings us to the subject of today's review, one of those "excellent works", Attack With the Blackmar Diemer by Guido de Bouver, sub-titled A Computer Analysis of the Teichmann, Gunderam, O'Kelly and Vienna lines in the Blackmar Diemer gambit.

For those not so familiar with the BDG, that means 1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 exf3 (or 4...c6, O'Kelly; or 4...Bf5, Vienna) 5.Nxf3 Bg4 (or 5...Bf5, Gunderam) Teichmann.?

I have to admit to a moment of unease when I first read that phrase "A Computer Analysis".

I know that no serious modern day opening analyst (or, as in the case of the Jerome Gambit, an un-serious opening analyst) dares to venture into a forest of variations without a silicon sabre at his (or her) side ? if only for clearing out unnecessary foliage and laying bare the main pathways.

Yet my experience?with Gary M. Danelishen's fantastic and?massive The Final Theory of Chess, to give one example,?is that computers can lay open the minds of chess openings, at the risk of impoverishing their souls. That Danelishen placed the Blackmar Diemer Gambit at the center of his White piece repertoire is bold and energetic; but, coming away from the work I was far more likely to yell "amortize those non-convertible debentures, if you would" than sing out "Yo! Ho! Ho! and?a bottle of rum!"

The great majority of chess books assume you know how to keep your pieces safe. Thus, almost all popular chess books are filled with grandiose and subtle strategies to obtain a small positional advantage. As you glance through this book, you will realize that this opening and this book is different. It's about tactics and how a computer deals with them. It doesn't cover subtle positional play, something the average chess player doesn't understand, anyway?? it's about the core business of chess ? how to get an attack against the enemy king!

I like that.

I've complained elsewhere on this blog that while my best friend, Rybka 3, can spot a tactical shot from over the hill and far away, too often it makes suggestions in a supposedly quiescent position that look like "tweak, adjust, nudge, modify, align..." and I despair of it ever understanding an unbalanced (in all senses of the word) chess?opening.

In Attack With the Blackmar Diemer, the human is driving the computer, not the other way around. Score one for de Bouver.

After an Introduction (including a Preface and a page of References [score another one for?the author]?which did not make it to the?Content table) the author continues with some information about Armand Edward Blackmar, the American player who developed the Blackmar Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.f3), and Emil Josef Diemer, who enlivened the gambit with the interpolation of 3.Nc3 before offering the f-pawn.

Mention is also made of Dr. Ryder, whose gambit (1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 exf3 5.Qxf3!?)?first entralled Diemer, and Ignatz von Popiel, who advocated development of the dark-squared White Bishop instead of the offer of the f-pawn (1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5).

As the Contents indicate, early chapters discuss each defense and give an outline of the play that develops. Later chapters give deeper?analysis and evaluations that are less wordy. This format works nicely.

The author does not cover every move and line for White, only those which provide him with the best chances for success. It's still quite a lot to keep the first player busy.

de Bouver is most sure about White's chances against the Teichmann defenses, and suggests that a well-prepared defender using the O'Kelly defense is likely to give White the most difficulty (with the Vienna and Gunderam defenses fitting in between the two). It is clear that he is dedicated to the BDG, but he does not allow his fervor to over-ride a sense of balance.

Attack With the Blackmar Diemer tackles the "playability" of the opening on two levels: first, by identifying the traditional "refutations" and giving lines of play against them; second, by alerting the reader to the fact that the opening needs a certain amount of upkeep and updating, lest White lose his edge and tumble off a thin and winding path; and last, by returning to the real world of over-the-board chess play of those who are likely to be using the book

Of course, if black takes the f-pawn, defends like Karpov and plays the endgame like Capablanca, then the proposed move... will not help the attacker, but then again, if you are really facing that kind of opponents, why are you reading this book? From the analyzed lines below, it shows that the attacker obtains dynamic compensation in every line for the offered pawn ? which should satisfy every gambiteer...
So to answer the eternal question "Isn't that refuted?", every gambiteer should be happy to answer "Of course", and roll out a new baffling variation with a big smile on his face.

It is this kind of energy and bravado that caused IM Gary Lane, in one of his "Opening Lanes" columns at ChessCafe.com, to note

The good news is that?[Guido de Bouver] apparently plans to publish a book on the BDG... My advice if you have a love of the opening is to seek it out and buy it at the first opportunity.

That is a strong endorsement, coming from someone who has written a book on the Blackmar Diemer Gambit himself!

As someone who has played the BDG for decades (and still play it, if someone wants to avoid my Jerome Gambit by playing 1...d5 to my 1.e4 ? I counter with 2.d4!?) I have to recommend Attack With the Blackmar Diemer as well.

Peter Thiel, the PayPal co-founder and one of the first investors in Facebook, is proposing a controversial path toward more rapid innovation. Today his Thiel Foundation announced that it was giving 24 people under 20 $100,000 fellowships to drop out of school for two years to start a their own companies.

Some of the recipients are leaving first-rate institutions like Harvard and Stanford to take the fellowship. In a press release, the foundation's head, James O'Neill, said that in taking the fellowship they were "challenging the authority of the present and the familiar."

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that Thiel thinks ideas can develop in a start-up environment much faster than at a university. And the project is also intended to question the idea of higher education. Thiel told TechCrunch in April that the United Sates was in a higher education bubble.

"A true bubble is when something is overvalued and intensely believed," he told Techcrunch. "Education may be the only thing people still believe in in the United States. To question education is really dangerous. It is the absolute taboo. It's like telling the world there's no Santa Claus."

The Chronicle of Higher Education adds Thiel is doing just that:

Students today are taking on more debt, and recently tightened bankruptcy laws make it more difficult to shake that debt, he argues, and those factors make higher education a risky investment. "If you get this wrong, it's actually a mistake that's hard to undo for the rest of your life," he said.

Critics contend that even so, Thiel's advice to leave school and develop a business is applicable only to a tiny fraction of students and that Thiel's own success, aided by business relationships forged during his days at Stanford, argues against leaving school.

But Thiel is convinced that the social pressure for students to pursue "lower-risk trajectories" in their career choices will lead to less innovation in the future.

Thiel, whom The New York Times calls a "contrarian" and "libertarian," told the paper that not everyone should drop out of college:

The fellows agree to stop getting a formal education for two years but can always go back to school. The problem, he said, is that "in our society the default assumption is that everybody has to go to college."
