New Jersey shopping plaza shootout leaves 3 dead

The man suspected of killing two people early this morning at a New Jersey Pathmark before shooting himself to death during a confrontation with police is believed to be a 23-year-old former Marine who worked at the grocery store for two weeks, according to WABC-TV.

The suspect left the Old Bridge, N.J., shopping plaza at about 4 a.m. and returned, having changed into camouflage clothing, armed with an AK-47 and an automatic handgun, authorities told WABC, which reported that both victims, a man and a woman, were young adults.

Police had responded to shots inside the Pathmark on Route 9 at 4 a.m.

Authorities believe the man killed two before turning the gun on himself, according to WABC. There's no word on his motive.

"This is the worst phone call a mayor can receive," Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry told NewJersey.com of the information he obtained about 6:30 a.m. "You can prepare for these things but you can't prevent them."

Several employees were inside the store, which was preparing to open at 6 a.m. Two windows near the entrance to the Pathmark were shot out.

Numerous employees were taken across the street to a T.G.I. Friday's and many were being treated for trauma at waiting ambulances.

The scene is now under control, according to WABC, and there were emergency responders in the plaza parking lot who had been standing in front of the store for some time.

CBA Thoughts

I posted something along this train of thought on the boards yesterday and I just wanted to elaborate on it a bit more.

So, Gary Bettman says that teams are losing money and the system has to be fix in order to save teams. Ok, seems like a fair enough reason to lower the cap but I do have few problems with this statement.

My main issue is I?m not sure he is telling the truth about the loses and I don?t think the NHLPA does either, which is why you see them asking for a better explanation. Below is an interview Gary did with Ron Maclean a few years back. Gary clear says,? revenues have gone up for five straight years?.

So, everything was tickity boo in 2010, but two years later the average team is losing nine million dollars? Something doesn?t add up, either Gary was lying back then or he?s lying now. Which is it?

The other thing that caught my attention that didn?t really add up was the Buffalo Sabres spending for this upcoming season. During the last lockout, The Sabres were the poster children as to why the system had to be fixed. The argument was along the line of we have to level the playing field to help the Sabres and the other small market teams.

Fast forward a few years, and under the system that was designed to help keep the Sabres afloat, the Sabres are now planning on spending more than any NHL team. Wait, whaaaat? Add to that, the second highest salaried team is the Minnesota Wild. A team that was cry poor just a few months back.

Now I don?t blame either team or their ownership groups for going out and tossing their money around. In fact, I applaud them for spending what they need to, to have a good team. I also haven?t heard either team cry poor since they have signed their big name players (and they better dam well not).

No my problem isn?t with these teams, my problem is with Gary using the record loses these teams will make this coming year in negotiations. What are the chances that Gary strolls into the boardroom and points out both the Wild and Sabres are looking at taking record loses this coming season.

He?ll bark out, ?See Donald, we have to lower salaries, teams are scheduled to take 20-40 million dollar loses next year. The system has to be cut back.?

To which the NHLPA will reply, ?Ah, talk to your owners. If they don?t understand how to budget, maybe look into getting them lessons on it.?

See, I believe Gary when he says that teams are losing money, but I?m not sure it?s because of the CBA? The problem is the same reason most people run into debt. It?s because certain owners chose to live beyond their means and it hurts all the owners.

If I go buy a house, I don?t whine about the mortgage payment and say it has to be scaled back because it is cutting into my pizza money. No, I make sure the mortgage isn?t too much and I budget accordingly. Owners should be forced to do the same. If they are ok taking a loss, let them take a loss. If they don?t want to take a loss, then don?t spend the money on players.

The best way to resolve this in my opinion has been suggested on these boards many of times. That way is to get rid or lower the cap floor. I would be ok with scaling the cap back as well, but 12 million is simply too difficult for teams to get under in a couple of weeks.

A 58 million cap, under the old rules, means no team can be over 10% of it during the offseason. Seven teams are over that number (63.8 million) right now. Will those teams face any kind of punishment for being over the 10%? And what will that punishment be? Contracts being ripped up? Draft picks?

Secondly, under the old rules, players could not earn more than 20% of team payroll. Right now there are five players that would be over 11.6 million (20%) next year. Do we roll those deals back? And if we do, is it only those deals that get scaled back? I can?t see how it is fair for the Preds to have Weber?s deal rolled back a few million and not give the Lightning some kind of a break on Lecavalier?s deal.

That?s a wrap.

Ian

Malaria: Protein impedes microcirculation of malaria-infected red blood cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? When the parasite responsible for malaria infects human red blood cells, it launches a 48-hour remodeling of the host cells. During the first 24 hours of this cycle, a protein called RESA undertakes the first step of renovation: enhancing the stiffness of the cell membranes.

That increased rigidity impairs red blood cells' ability to travel through the blood vessels, especially at fever temperatures, according to a new study from researchers at MIT, the Institut Pasteur and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

This marks the first time that scientists have identified the specific role of the RESA protein in modulating blood circulation in an environment that mimics physiological conditions, and could help researchers determine new strategies to combat malaria, which infects an estimated 300 to 500 million people worldwide each year.

The study -- coordinated by MIT's Ming Dao, a principal research scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE); Monica Diez Silva, a research scientist in DMSE; and YongKeun Park, an assistant professor of physics at KAIST -- appears Aug. 30 in Scientific Reports, an online journal of Nature.

Other MIT authors are Subra Suresh, former dean of the MIT School of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering who is currently on leave from MIT serving as the director of the National Science Foundation; Jongyoon Han, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS); Sha Huang, an EECS graduate student; recent PhD recipient Hansen Bow; and the late Michael Feld, professor of physics.

This paper is the culmination of a collaboration between MIT and Institut Pasteur begun in 2004 when Suresh spent a sabbatical in Paris. The new results on dynamic microcirculation significantly extend earlier static experiments by the Suresh lab and the Pasteur team published in 2007, in which they found that RESA makes the red blood cell membrane stiffer than that of a healthy red blood cell by binding to the cell's internal scaffolding, called the cytoskeleton.

"The new work combines the latest advances in genetics, microfabrication, nanomechanics and computational modeling by bringing together interdisciplinary and international teams," says Suresh, the senior author of the paper.

Parasite invasion

When a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, bites a human, the parasite invades the liver, where it divides to produce tens of thousands of merozoites -- the form that can infect red blood cells. After several days or weeks, these merozoites are released into the bloodstream.

In the next stage of infection, the merozoites take up residence inside the red blood cells for about 48 hours, producing more copies of themselves. The RESA protein is expressed only during the first 24 hours, which is known as the "ring stage" due to the circular shape of the merozoites. During this stage, RESA "almost singlehandedly" alters the mechanical properties of red blood cell membranes, Dao says.

For the new study, the researchers created a microfluidic system at MIT that allowed them to study how RESA influences malaria-infected cells as they circulate. As cells flow through the microfluidic channels, they encounter narrow openings that are about the same width as the smallest capillaries (about three micrometers, or about 4 percent of the thickness of the human hair). The team found that malaria-infected cells passed through these channels much more slowly than healthy cells, due to the increased rigidity of the cells caused by the RESA protein.

The researchers also studied infected blood cells as they flowed through a microbead filtration system created at the Institut Pasteur. This system, which consists of densely packed tiny spheres, mimics the structure of the human spleen, which filters blood and removes old blood cells.

While RESA made the infected cells more rigid, they were still able to make it through the microbead system, suggesting that they would also slip through the spleen undetected. "In the ring stage the majority of the infected cells still go past, producing new parasites," Diez Silva says.

The researchers also found that RESA's effects on membrane stiffness and deformability are enhanced at fever temperatures: At these higher temperatures, RESA stabilizes the cell membrane so that it won't disintegrate. This is advantageous to the parasite because it helps the cell remain intact until the end of the 48-hour cycle, allowing it to produce many more copies of itself.

Mohandas Narla, vice president for research at the New York Blood Center, says the study is impressive and one of very few to look at the effects of temperature on malaria infection.

"Malaria is a very widespread global disease, so there is a lot of research being done on it, but most of the people who study it focus on biophysical measurements without paying attention to the fever part of the story," says Narla, who was not part of the research team.

Stopping the cycle

During the second 24 hours of the red blood cell infection, when RESA is no longer expressed, the parasite starts producing other proteins that make the cells even more rigid. They also churn out proteins that cause the cells to clump together and stick to the walls of blood vessels. At the end of the 48-hour cycle, the infected red blood cells burst and release new copies of the parasite, which target new cells and start the cycle over again.

Because they are so sticky, infected blood cells can't reach the spleen during this stage, so there is no chance for them to be filtered out. The new findings suggest that it might be beneficial to seek drugs that boost RESA expression during the first half of the cycle, when cells are still able to get into the spleen, the researchers say. Then, because the cells would be more rigid than typical infected blood cells, the spleen might be able to capture more of them.

The researchers are now further exploring how the spleen interacts with malaria-infected cells. The new microfluidic system used to mimic microcirculation in the small blood vessels is also being further studied as a novel diagnostic tool for detecting malaria and other diseases.

The research was funded by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Center, the National Institutes of Health, the KAIST Institute for Optical Science and Technology, and the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche.

Typhoon hits N. Korea, still reeling from floods

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon that killed at least 10 people in South Korea hit the North early Wednesday, knocking down hundreds of trees, destroying power cables and causing blackouts in a country already struggling to rebuild from earlier flooding.

Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in North Korea because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure, but the extent of wind and rain damage in the country wasn't immediately clear Wednesday. Pyongyang, the capital, saw strong winds but little apparent damage. Cars splashed through slightly flooded streets, spraying people on crowded sidewalks.

Typhoon Bolaven began pummeling the North late Tuesday, on the country's first Youth Day since new leader Kim Jong Un took over in December. Weather officials had warned that it would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts in other parts of Asia weren't as powerful as predicted.

In South Korea, Bolaven left hundreds of thousands without power, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces. The storm also churned up rough seas that smashed two fishing ships into rocks off southern Jeju island, killing five people and leaving 10 missing.

Dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the wrecked Chinese fishing ships. The coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

The coast guard rescued 12 fishermen, and six others swam or were washed ashore.

The storm killed at least five other people across South Korea. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop and another person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials. An 80-year-old man died after a small makeshift building fell on him, officials said, and another man was killed by a falling tree.

About 1.9 million South Korean homes and businesses lost power, the National Emergency Management Agency said, though all but about 34,000 had electricity restored by Wednesday morning. Nearly 100 families were left homeless Wednesday because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled Tuesday, but airports were running normally on Wednesday. There were 860 hectares (2,130 acres) of farmland flooded and 32 ships damaged, the agency said in a statement.

The storm came as North Korea tries to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks.

Wife of Russian opposition activist gets jail

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian opposition activist was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison in an appeal of her drug-related case ?twice as long as prosecutors had requested in a ruling that drew immediate opposition outrage.

Taisiya Osipova and her supporters have maintained that police planted four grams of heroin in her home in 2010 in revenge for her refusal to testify against her husband, Sergei Fomchenkov, also an activist with The Other Russia opposition movement. A witness for the defense testified at the trial that he saw a police officer put the drugs in Osipova's apartment.

Eduard Limonov, the leader of The Other Russia party, told Interfax on Tuesday that "this verdict is not only a political one, it's also terrifying revenge."

Fomchenkov reported the verdict on his Twitter account. The court in Smolensk was not available to confirm the verdict.

Prosecutors had asked for four years in prison for Osipova.

Osipova, 28, has been in jail since her arrest in 2010 and was originally sentenced to ten years in jail in December 2011. A higher court in February overturned that decision, ordering a review of her case, while Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview that the sentence was too harsh.

Left-wing opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov described the verdict in his Twitter as "a triumph of lawlessness and cynicism."

Osipova was one of the most prominent names on a list of people activists described as political prisoners submitted to then-President Medvedev in February.

Mikhail Fedotov, head of the presidential council on human rights, in an interview with the Interfax news agency on Tuesday described the verdict as a "legal mistake."

The 'Sweet Spot' of Investing: 3 Cheap Small-Cap Stocks with the ...

Small-cap value stocks have consistently outperformed all other categories of stocks.

That?s the message coming from the industry?s most respected academic and financial institutions.

Small-cap value stocks outperformed the general market by 4.3% annually from 1926-1997, according to Morningstar?s registered investment adviser subsidiary Ibbotson Associates. Leading investment firm Vanguard has also published research showing that small-cap value outperformed large-cap value, blended and growth portfolios from 1927-2004.

But it?s not just a generally bullish trend that has carried this group. University of Chicago finance professors Kenneth French and Eugene Fama of the popular French-Fama asset pricing model ? a valuation strategy that looks for small-cap stocks that are in value territory ? concluded that small-cap value stocks outperformed other classes during recessions as well. Another report by Fund Evaluation Group highlighted how small-cap value has outperformed all other groups by a wide margin.

This trend has been on display in the past 12 years. The chart below and shows how the iShares Russell 2000 Index (IWM) of small cap stocks has destroyed the major averages, returning 85% to the S&P 500?s 3% loss.

There are two reasons why small caps offer the potential for such large returns. The first is just a simple matter of math, where companies starting from a base of lower sales and operations have opportunity to grow many times over. This is basically like the power of compounding on steroids.

The second factor is imperfect information. Unlike large caps, which can have as many as 25 covering analysts creating research reports, information on small caps is harder to come by. Although this might seem annoying because investors like information about stocks and markets, it creates a big opportunity. Less information, analysis and coverage frequently leads to shares being over or under valued.

Applying the Fama-French model and looking for strong earnings and earnings growth is a great way to separate the winners from the losers.

With this in mind, here are three top small-cap value gems I found?

1. CARBO Ceramics (NYSE: CRR)

CARBO is a basic materials company in the energy services industry with a market cap of $1.7 billion. The company specializes in developing and manufacturing ceramic propant, a substance that drillers use in the extraction process of natural gas commonly referred to as ?fracking.? Much like the general weakness in energy stocks, Carbo?s share price has fallen more than 50% in the past year.

While that may be a setback for current shareholders, the valuation has rarely looked better. With a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 13, returning to the average of 24 in the past 10 years would have shares of Carbo up 90% from current levels.

2. Impax Labs (Nasdaq: IPXL)

This generic and branded drug maker has a market cap of $1.5 billion. The company specializes in drugs for central nervous system disorders, Alzheimer?s disease, attention deficit disorder and Parkinson?s disease. Impax recently reported excellent second-quarter results that included a 36% upside earnings surprise.

Analysts were quick to upgrade their earnings projections, with the full-year 2012 estimate jumping 15% to $2.05. But in spite of those gains, shares only trade for 13 times forward earnings. If Impax returned to just its average valuation of the past 10 years. then shares would jump 34%.

3. Coeur d? Alane Mines (NYSE: CDE)

Coeur d? Alane is a silver miner based in Idaho with mining assets in the United States, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina and Australia. In spite of the price of gold holding in elevated territory, gold stocks have performed terribly in the past year. With Coeur d?Alene trading just above $21, shares are well off the 52-week high of $30.99.

This probably has a lot to do with weakness in the current-year estimate, falling 69 cents in the past 90 days to $1.26 per share. But longer-term, the next-year estimate still looks great, pegged at $2.63, a bullish 108% growth projection. That is a big opportunity for investors taking a longer-term view.

Risks to Consider: Small-cap stocks are known for extreme volatility. Although many small caps grow into mid- and large-caps, there are plenty of others that fail or go out of business. Investors buying small-cap stocks should be ready for short-term volatility in order to have a chance at outsized gains in the long run.

Action to Take ?> These three undervalued small-cap stocks are in position for big long-term gains as each company advances through early and medium stages of growth. Investors who are not afraid of some volatility should snap up shares while they?re still cheap.

U.N.'s Ban tells Iranian leaders to prove nuclear program peaceful

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon met Iran's president and supreme leader in Tehran on Wednesday and urged them to take concrete steps to prove the country's nuclear program is peaceful.

He also called on all states to stop supplying arms to the conflict in Syria, Ban's spokesman, Martin Nesirky, said.

He told reporters in New York that in separate meetings with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the secretary-general further said that he considered their latest verbal attacks on Israel to be offensive, inflammatory and unacceptable.

Ban arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for a three-day visit to attend a meeting of some 120 non-aligned nations. He defied calls from the United States and Israel to boycott the event.

"On the nuclear question ... he said that he regretted that little tangible progress has been achieved so far," Nesirky, speaking by telephone from Tehran, told reporters in New York.

"He said that Iran needed to take concrete steps to address the concerns of the International Atomic Energy Agency and prove to the world that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes," Nesirky said.

Iran says its program is peaceful, but Western powers and their allies fear it is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran has been hit with four rounds of U.N. Security Council sanctions for refusing to halt its nuclear enrichment program.

On Syria, Ban urged Iran's leaders to use their influence to call on Syria's President Bashar al-Assad to end the violence and create conditions for "credible dialogue and a genuine political process that meets the will of the Syrian people."

"The secretary-general reiterated his opposition to the further militarization of the conflict and called on all states to stop supplying arms to all sides in Syria," Nesirky said.

Last week the United Nations said Iran appears to be supplying Syria with weapons, as the 17-month conflict that began as a popular uprising against Assad slides deeper into civil war.

Ban expressed concern about the human rights situation in Iran and also said that he strongly objected to recent remarks by Iran's leaders on Israel.

Earlier this month Ahmadinejad said there was no place for the Jewish state in a future Middle East and Khamenei said Israel would one day be returned to the Palestinian nation and would cease to exist.

"He said such offensive and inflammatory statements were unacceptable and should be condemned by all," Nesirky said.

Land and Real Estate in Arizona iWebdeveloper: Deep Linking ...

Getting land in Arizona

Moving to Arizona has the ultimate choices from buying raw land to purchasing land in a far more rural location to add a manufactured home to developing a luxury custom residence. Obtaining land is simple; Obtaining land which is worth getting is really a totally different story.

I can especially tell you about Arizona although this may be prevalent in other areas also. What to watch out for are Land fissures, Drinking water (how far you must drill to set up a pump), all-natural washes, and all-natural washes that turn into re-routed from other building and location development, and most importantly flood plains.

Should you acquire land on a hill or close to a mountain count on to have above typical ground movement and more expenses for the foundations. Also high speed net could grow to be an issue unless you can get utilized to utilizing a high speed cell card.

If you?re dreaming of a home with land to possess horses and other friendly domestic animals you may examine with city ordinances very first. For example in the event you buy land that was recently annexed by Surprise AZ. You may be shocked by the no farm animal ordinances. Even when homeowners nearby already have this type of animal living on the land they?ve owned for many years this can be a large concern if that is what you were planning for the land.

Remember that Arizona water can be a quite large subject here, being in a desert water conservation is essential. Wells that are functioning now may have to be dug deeper within the future because the land about is developed. Significant subdivisions moving in about you?ll be able to lower a water table fairly fast and trigger you to possess to create modifications for your nicely, the storage tank and also how deep your properly is.

Ant-inspired Internet - the 'Anternet' - may be coming soon

18 hrs.

Ants get stuff done without anyone in control. Understanding how they do what they do could help us design more robust and efficient networks, according to a biologist who studies ant colony behavior.

A recent study shows that harvester ants, for example, regulate how many ants are out searching for food in a way that resembles how Internet protocols regulate the amount of data being transferred according to the amount of available bandwidth.?

The protocol, called the Transmission Control Protocol, sends out packets of data and waits until it receives an acknowledgement that the packet was received before sending out more packets.

An acknowledgement that comes back slower than the data was sent is a sign of traffic congestion, so the data source scales back its rate of data transmission. If the acknowledgment comes back faster than it was sent, the reverse is true and the data transfer speed is increased.

Harvester ants behave the same way when searching for food. The rate at which foragers leave the nest to look for seeds corresponds to the rate at which ants return and thus to food availability, according to Deborah Gordon, a biologist at Stanford University in California.

Individual ants try not to return to the nest empty-handed. When seeds are plentiful, the foragers return quickly, meaning more ants will leave the nest to find food. If they return slowly, the system is throttled down.

Gordon?s colleague, Balaji Prabhakar, a professor of computer science at Stanford, made the connection between the ant behavior and the way the Internet protocol works. They published their findings on the so-called "anternet"?in the Aug. 23 issue of PLoS Computational Biology.?

In this case, humans designed an algorithm to solve a traffic congestion problem on the Internet before they found the solution in an ant colony.

If we study the ants first, ?we are likely to learn about some new solutions to large-scale network problems,? Gordon told me Monday.?

This may be particularly true, she said, as the Internet becomes larger and unwieldy and expensive to operate as more and more data is moved to the cloud.

?We already know that ants are good at a particular kind of problem that we are trying to solve,? she said. ?That is, how to operate systems with lots of information and moving around complicated pathways and no central control.?

One solution to operating more complex networks may be the introduction of randomness into the system, as ant colonies do.

?It will still work well enough and it?s a lot cheaper and more effective than trying to [specify everything centrally], so you can actually use less information to get the same result,? she explained in a follow up email.

Doing that means accepting that a certain level of randomness is helpful to the functioning of a system, not damaging.

?That?s what the ants can teach us. They have ways of [organizing networks] that use more randomness and more redundancy,? Gordon said.

Concrete Paver Molds: The latest Trend in Home Improvement

As a native Californian, I?ve come to accept that residence exteriors are almost always constructing working with either siding or stucco. Bricks are utilised sparingly, if at all, and stonework is generally confined to indoor tiles and outdoor patio stones, river rock set in gardens, and exposed aggregate patios. A lot more generally than not, though, walkways, patios, and driveways are just poured concrete.

Personally, I?ve normally been attracted to stonework of all types. No matter whether it?s a cobblestone driveway, a fireplace made from river rock, or a ledge stone wall, I consider that stonework adds beauty and interest to a house. Given that stonework can cost upwards of twelve dollars a square foot, even so, I?ve never been in a position to afford to remodel my property employing the stones, rocks, and tiles that so attract me.

Then I ran across an report about concrete paver molds, and found that there?s a brand new trend in property improvement: producing your personal, custom colored, concrete stones, rocks, tiles, and bricks. I?ve tried it, and together with the proper preparation and directions, have found that I can make my own constructing supplies for just pennies. Inside a nutshell, here?s how it works?.

Concrete Molds

Initial, you need to start with high quality concrete molds (although many people call them cement molds or plaster molds). You will discover providers that make concrete stone molds, patio molds, concrete paver molds, stone veneer molds, and brick veneer molds. Based on the type of stone or tile, the mold might cover an region ranging from about four square feet to about seven square feet. A ledge stone mold, as an example, may perhaps generate 16 ledge stones, even though a river rock mold may produce 12 river rocks. Ideally, you must buy a number of molds to ensure that you have got a rocks or stones with a variety of appearances. Keep in mind, even though, that you can use unique colors or turn stones in unique direction so that it does not look like you?re using duplicate stone or rock shapes.

Preparing Concrete Molds

After you have your concrete molds and are ready to begin your project, you need to apply a mold release item so it is possible to conveniently take out the stones, tiles, or bricks when they?re completed. Though some firms advocate utilizing motor oil, the run off is poor for the atmosphere. Several of the newer mold release solutions may be sprayed into the concrete molds using a spray bottle ? a substantially preferable approach.

Mixing Colors

The artistry in producing your personal concrete rocks, tiles, and bricks is in finding and mixing the colors you like. Initially, you mix a base color into a concrete and sand mixture. After you have this base color, you?ll be able to add further amounts and combinations of color to provide you the range you seek. Indeed, you may create an infinite variety of colors merely by adjusting the color densities. The most beneficial colors are made from synthetic iron oxides, even though some individuals have had good results with all-natural oxides, ceramic stains, as well as latex paint.

Concrete Pouring and Curing

Your concrete mixture need to be fairly stiff and not soupy. Using a scoop, you pour the concrete mixture in to the concrete paver molds and fill the mold towards the best. For those who merely want a veneer stone or tile, it is possible to partially fill the mold.

If you have ever worked with concrete, you understand that it is significant to get all of the air bubbles out soon after a pour. This will be accomplished by bouncing the concrete stone molds up and down, or by getting and using a vibrating table. Subsequent, cover the mold in plastic and let it rest out of the direct sunlight.

The longer you let the concrete cure, the stronger it?s going to be. The concrete molds and be unmolded right after 24 hours, but it is finest to wait longer. The moment you release the stones, tiles, or bricks, you must rewrap them in plastic to preserve the moisture and let them remedy for an further two weeks. Then, you basically have to apply sealant for your creations, and they?ll be ready to install.

I?ve found that in a position to make a beautiful stone pathway, tile entryway, or river rock fireplace is extremely rewarding. And to feel that it all started when I read an article about concrete paver molds.

Hisense Pulse Google TV set-top box coming in November for 'under $99'

It was just two days ago that a Google product manager let slip that Google was working with Hisense on a low-cost Google TV box. At the time, we didn't know much -- not even a product name -- but Google did intimate this mystery item would sell for under $100. Now, Hisense is stepping in to clarify a few key details. For starters, this thing is called the Pulse, and it will arrive in November priced at "under $99," more or less as expected. Other than the fact that it's built on Android (duh), it supports resolutions ranging from 480i to 1080p and has HDMI, USB and Ethernet sockets. (It also has WiFi, of course, in case you'd rather not make use of that wired internet connection.) Hisense also says it will ship with a double-sided remote, with a full QWERTY keyboard on one side, and a touchpad and dedicated Netflix button on the other. The Pulse is slated to arrive in mid-November, but there's a good chance we'll see it before then -- it's going to be on display at IFA, where we'll be reporting live this week.

Lenovo's K860 phablet gets priced in China 2,188 yuan on August 28th

Lenovo's K860 has been making the rounds for a while now. That five-incher's specs are hardly a secret. But, what has continued to evade us was a price and release date for this quad-core Exynos-powered beast. Thankfully, the Chinese manufacturer has finally come clean and we are happy to tell you the phablet will be hitting shelves tomorrow, August 28th, for 2,188 yuan (about $344). The initial run of this heavily skinned ICS handset will be fairly limited unfortunately -- only 2,000 will be released on the first day. But, we're sure a wider release can't be far behind.

Former South Carolina governor engaged

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford proposed marriage to his Argentine lover in the same way he has lived since their affair derailed his political career: combining elements of secrecy with unfiltered expressions of love, and a touch of the weird as well. Sanford confirmed Sunday that he's engaged to Maria Belen Chapur, an intensely private divorced woman whose affair with the married Republican father of four children became tabloid news three years ago.

He proposed to her on Wednesday in the Bella Italia Grille, a high-end restaurant in the upscale Palermo neighborhood, around the corner from Chapur's luxury apartment, the restaurant's manager said Sunday.

The couple have been regular customers at the restaurant, but this time they arrived separately. Sanford arrived first, and considered a table in the main dining room, but then turned it down as too noisy, said the restaurant manager, who gave his name only as Gustavo.

The manager said Sanford settled on a table for two near the door, and left the engagement ring in a small box with one of the waiters, telling him to give it to Chapur when she arrived. Then he hid out in the bathroom for disabled guests, where cracking open the door provides a direct view of the table, and waited for more than an hour before she finally arrived, the manager said.

The waiter then gave Chapur the box, telling her something about winning a prize. She opened it and seemed puzzled to see the ring until Sanford walked up, declared his love and asked her to marry him. She quickly said yes and they kissed and cried, but no one else in the restaurant seemed to notice, the manager said.

"We're very discreet. They are, too. Nobody noticed. They really are private people," said the manager, who declined to give his last name and said protecting his clients was paramount.

Sanford, who was South Carolina's governor from 2003-2011, had been a rising star in the Republican party with presidential aspirations when he disappeared from the state for five days in 2009. Reporters were told he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. But when he returned to South Carolina, Sanford admitted that he was instead in Argentina with Maria Belen Chapur, whom he later called his soul mate.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I suspect many of these things do, in just a casual email back and forth in advice on one's life there and advice here. But here recently, over this last year, it developed into something much more than that," Sanford said then in explaining the affair.

Sanford's wife, Jenny, divorced him, and his political career was derailed. The affair also prompted impeachment hearings over Sanford's use of state planes, campaign cash and first-class travel. The former South Carolina congressman ended up paying $74,000 in ethics fines and reimbursed the state for the investigation and for travel and personal expenses.

While Sanford professed his love publicly for the woman in Argentina, Chapur never spoke out, issuing just one terse statement asking for privacy.

When asked about the engagement by The Associated Press on Sunday, Sanford simply vouched for the accuracy of a statement released earlier in the day.

"I'd love to talk but we're going to end up in no man's land," Sanford told the AP. "The only comment I'll stand by is that there was a statement sent to CNN and I stand by its accuracy. I don't know anything beyond that."
