Romney comments at fundraiser outrage Palestinians

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians, outraging Palestinian leaders who suggested his comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East. His campaign later said his remarks were mischaracterized.

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who ate breakfast at the luxurious King David Hotel.

Romney said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between neighboring countries, like Mexico and the United States.

Palestinian reaction to Romney was swift and pointed.

"It is a racist statement and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," Erekat added. "He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority."

As criticism mounted while Romney traveled to Poland, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said: "His comments were grossly mischaracterized." The Republican's campaign contends Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities ? the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador ? shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and Palestine.

While speaking to U.S. audiences, Romney often highlights culture as a key to economic success and emphasizes the power of the American entrepreneurial spirit compared to the values of other countries. But his decision to highlight cultural differences in a region where such differences have helped fuel violence for generations raises new questions about the former businessman's diplomacy skills.

As he has at home, Romney in Jerusalem cited a book titled, "Guns, Germs and Steel," that suggests the physical characteristics of the land account for the differences in the success of the people that live there.

"And you look at Israel and you say you have a hard time suggesting that all of the natural resources on the land could account for all the accomplishment of the people here," Romney said, before citing another book, "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations," by former Harvard professor David Landes.

This book, Romney said in Jerusalem, concludes that "if you could learn anything from the economic history of the world it's this: Culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference."

The economic disparity between the Israelis and the Palestinians is actually much greater than Romney stated. Israel had a per capita gross domestic product of about $31,000 in 2011, while the West Bank and Gaza had a per capita GDP of just over $1,500, according to the World Bank.

Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, told donors that he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference in economic disparity between countries is so great.

His comparison of the two economies did not take into account the stifling effect the Israeli occupation has had on the Palestinian economy in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem ? areas Israel captured in 1967 where the Palestinians hope to establish a state.

In the West Bank, Palestinians have only limited self-rule. Israel controls all border crossings in and out of the territory, and continues to restrict Palestinian trade and movement. Israel annexed east Jerusalem in 1967, but has invested much less heavily there than in Jewish west Jerusalem.

And although Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, it continues to control access and has enforced a crippling border blockade since the Islamic militant Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

It's true that Israel has logged tremendous achievements, said Abraham Diskin, a political science professor at the Inter-Disciplinary Center outside of Tel Aviv. But "you can understand this remark in several ways," he added. "You can say it's anti-Semitic. 'Jews and money.'"

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund repeatedly have said that the Palestinian economy can only grow if Israel lifts those restrictions.

"It's Israeli occupiers and Palestinians under occupation, and that's why Palestinians cannot realize their potential," Erekat said.

The breakfast with top donors ? including Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer ? concluded Romney's visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and said the U.S. has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The status of Jerusalem is a critical issue in peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

In Israel, Romney did not meet with Abbas or visit the West Bank. He met briefly with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Romney's campaign says the trip, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Barack Obama while on foreign soil.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, was a political event that raised more than $1 million for Romney's campaign. It marks at least the second finance event during his tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500-per-person fundraiser.

Both presidential candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a practice that is legal and has been used for decades.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

His remarks on the subject during a speech drew a standing ovation from the audience, which included Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Adelson was among a several donors who flew to Israel for a day of sightseeing with Romney in addition to private meetings with top Israeli officials.

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, Obama visited Israel as a presidential candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but the stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel.

High-risk human papilloma virus found with Epstein Barr virus

Two common viruses known to be associated with human cancers are both present and may even be collaborating with each other - in most male prostate cancers, a new study suggests.

The research involved examination of 100 specimens of normal, malignant and benign prostate samples from Australian men.

It revealed that both the human papilloma virus (HPV) and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) were present in more than half of the malignant cancers, as well as in a high proportion of benign and normal prostate samples.

Details of the study, led by Associate Professor Noel Whitaker and Professor James Lawson, of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, are published in the journal The Prostate.

The research team included other UNSW researchers and colleagues from the Department of Forensic Medicine Sydney South West Area Health Service and at Douglass, Hanly, Moir Pathology.

"Recent unpublished experimental evidence by other researchers suggests that HPV and EBV can collaborate to promote the survival and proliferation of cancer cells, so our findings may well have important implications for understanding and preventing prostate cancer," says Professor Whitaker.

"Significantly, in our prostate samples we found a high-risk strain known as HPV 18, which is known to be associated with other human cancers.

"HPV 18 is a common high-risk strain in Australia and is a specific target of the Gardasil vaccine now offered free to teenage girls to protect against cervical cancer.

"We note recent proposals to offer Gardasil to Australian teenage boys as well, with the aim of preventing the spread of the virus to women through sexual contact. If HPV 18 is also associated with prostate cancers, as our research suggests, vaccinating boys may yet prove to have an unexpected direct benefit for them as well."

Earlier research by Professor Whitaker's team has found that HPV is present in about 40% of breast cancers as well. The new study found that HPV alone is present in about 70% of the malignant prostate cancers sampled.

EBV has also been linked to head and neck cancers, particularly in south-east Asian countries: like HPV, it is spread mostly by close skin contact, leading it to be dubbed "the kissing disease."

While HPV has been detected before in prostate cancers, this is one of only a few studies and the first in Australia to confirm the presence of both high-risk HPV and EBV in the same cancer tissues.

"I should caution that their presence is not conclusive of a role in prostate cancer," says Professor Whitaker. "But given their well-established track record with other cancers, it would seem quite unlikely that they are harmless."

What You Should Know About Hiring A Babysitter - Parenting Skills ...

The media has a habit of accentuating the negative. The horror stories they come up with are not the norm. When it comes to hiring a baby sitters, there are many good ones out there, and you can rest assured that your children will be well taken care of.

It?s the job of the media to put out articles that people are going to read or listen to. But these types of situations are very few when you consider that they are reporting happenings nationwide. The following is a list of such incidents and how you can handle them.

Often, you may consider a teenager, but the thought in the back of your mind may be, ?Will they really pay attention to my child?? or ?What if they just talk on the phone all night long?? Now this could be the case, but you do NOT have to hire the first one that waltzes into your home.

You do not have to choose the first person who answers your babysitting ad. You want to gather a few candidates and then interview each one of them in person so you can judge how responsible each one is. And do not forget that your pool of candidates can include adult babysitters. There are some very capable senior citizens open to babysitting, too.

Don?t forget to do a background check on your babysitting candidate, which anyone can have done. If you are looking for as little work as possible, consider using a babysitting agency. They screen their applicants beforehand for a shady history.

Make sure you frequently communicate with your children. Let them know that they are to come to you if anything makes them scared or uncomfortable. In some cases, if the babysitter did do something wrong, they could threaten your child to keep quiet. Reassure your child that they will be safe if they share what happened.

Give your babysitter the house rules and tell them they need to stick to them. Remember that yours was brought up a certain way and may be bringing some bad habits into your home without meaning to. Think about their family background when you are interviewing and checking them. Curse words, smoking, and drinking are not good habits for your babysitter to have.

The best way to be sure you do not run into problems is to hire that person whom you are most comfortable with. Thinking a problem will go away is not a good idea. There are plenty of people out there who are honest and hard-working so that you don?t have to settle for someone you have doubts about.

Making Money Online From An Internet Business Option? | 2leep.in ...

Simple on the web searches reveal various possibilities hyping they are businesses, but many are not businesses at all. Sales schemes are variously disguised income systems providing commissions. However, the lure of income and freedom, wrapped with the assurance an person can become an owner? confuses many would-be entrepreneurs. Most of the opportunities lack attraction for knowledgeable owners of old-fashioned brick-and-mortar and service businesses. I?m some of those entrepreneurs, having held several regular-old-businesses (furniture stores) before deciding to go ?Internet? and keep the stock, rents and workers behind. It didn?t take long to see that real business chances online are fairly slim. The obvious Internet options left me cold. The concept of employed in sales being an affiliate had some interest, until I found the tiny profit margins included after subtracting marketing expenses.Sometimes the cost was this is the involvement of hours, days and months of work to make a tiny sum of money by referring members to a site. Other times, each time a few hundred dollars of startup money was concerned, I discovered a traditional network marketing organization lurking behind it. These ?Businesses? may attract a neophyte scared of responsibility and having low expectations. However, they?re not fulfilling to a person who expects their business to guide properties, cars and family. So, the question is, are you really buying a business, or simply a program to make some extra cash?If you want a, then you most likely know that businesses demand startup capital, risk, running capital, marketing, promotion and a location to talk with customers. On the Internet, your business location is most likely your web page. When you are thinking that is all you need, however, contemplate that without customers, you will have no revenue. It?s a confusing undeniable fact that on the Internet there?s no good ?Location? for a business. There?s no hectic avenue corner, no wealthy town. Each business manager should use marketing and advertising to bring customers. The fall of most Internet businesses isn?t insufficient a great product, or having a sub-standard web page. When the business is effectively capitalized, and has not supplied their entire budget on website development (that?s another story completely) their ruin is just a lack of traffic due to ineffective marketing and advertising.Very few Internet business chances stress marketing a lot more than they stress their products and services, but in my opinion that they should. One way would be to have an advertising system, where the dog owner can pay for many services. Some operations offer that. (Consider national fast-food restaurants who all benefit from the same big press campaigns.) Another way would be to provide instruction so that each owner/operator can manage their own ads and marketing, either by carrying it out themselves or by outsourcing. Now, given the expense of advertising and outsourcing, everyone considering beginning an online business should watch on the main point here. This indicates obvious, but if your income on an is $50, you should not spend more than $49.99 to get that sale. So, entrepreneurs should weigh their get back on investment meticulously before diving in to any new venture. The other factor is recouping your startup costs. In traditional companies, the profit generally may take years before hoping to visit a profit. Internet business start-up expenses often contain heavy web site design costs, and then heavy marketing and marketing budgets. Those charges could be reduced by learning and employing many skills, and maintaining outsourcing costs to the absolute minimum, when you are a ?bootstrap? entrepreneur, but there is still purchase involved. So consider what you want when trying to start an Internet business. You will need a web site, a marketing system and high-profit products. But first and foremost, you will need education how to operate your business online. There are extremely few packages available which give all of that for you personally, but they do exist.

Concordia research proves consumers are drawn to centrally placed products

Montreal, July 30, 2012 Rows of chip bags in a vending machine, endless bottles of shampoo on pharmacy shelves, long lines of books arranged in the bestsellers section at the bookstore. From supermarket shelves to barroom beer selection, long lines of horizontally arranged products are the norm when it comes to the shopping experience.

But how does where a product is placed on the storeroom shelf influence which option a consumer will ultimately choose? It turns out that the shopper's eye has a very central focus.

"Consumers are more likely to purchase products placed in the middle of a display without even being aware of it," says Onur Bodur. The associate professor from Concordia's John Molson School of Business is the co-author of a recent study forthcoming in the Journal of Consumer Research and co-authored by marketing researchers at HEC in France and the Aston Business School in England.

Using eye-tracking devices, Bodur and his colleauges investigated how location influences choices for products as varied as vitamins, meal replacement bars, and energy drinks.

They found that consumers would increase their visual focus on the central option in a product display area in the final five seconds of the decision-making process and that was the point at which they determined which option to choose.

It turns out that the process is a subconscious one. When asked how they had come to decide on what product to buy, consumers did not accurately recall their choice process. What's more, they were not aware of any conscious visual focus on one area of the display over another.

What does uncovering these unconscious habits mean this mean for the average shopper? Greater awareness of buying behaviours should lead to more informed choices. Says Bodur, "by using this newfound knowledge that visual attention is naturally drawn to the center of a display, consumers can consciously train themselves to make a more thorough visual scan of what's on offer."

When it comes to shopping, the visual equivalent to thinking outside of the box just might lead to savvier selections.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks edged up on Monday ahead of announcements from central banks later in the week after gains in the prior two sessions pushed the benchmark S&P index to its highest close since May 3.

Increasing optimism last week that the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank (ECB) might provide further stimulus sparked the S&P 500's biggest two-day rally since December and lifted the Dow above 13,000 for the first time since May 7.

The Fed and the ECB both meet this week amid investor expectations of action to stimulate economic growth and hopes the ECB tackles a spreading euro zone debt crisis. ECB President Mario Draghi said last week the bank was ready to do whatever was necessary, within its mandate, to save the euro.

"You won't get movement either way, the market just has to catch up with itself," said Ken Polcari, managing director at ICAP Equities in New York. "That being the case, certainly everyone thinks that Europe is going to come out with this big bazooka and they also think the Fed will launch so therefore the market is going to stay up here."

A rally in Italian and Spanish government bonds showed signs of exhaustion as investors waited for European policymakers to back up their pledges to safeguard the euro with new anti-crisis measures.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 27.77 points, or 0.21 percent, to 13,103.43. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 2.70 points, or 0.19 percent, to 1,388.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 11.00 points, or 0.37 percent, to 2,969.09.

Roper Industries Inc rose 6.6 percent to $105.05 after the company said it will buy privately held Sunquest Information Systems Inc, a provider of diagnostic and laboratory software services to healthcare providers, for about $1.4 billion in cash. The diversified manufacturer also posted second-quarter earnings and raised its full-year 2012 outlook.

S&P 500 companies set to report quarterly earnings on Monday include Anadarko Petroleum Corp and Eastman Chemical Co.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Friday, of the 280 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for Q2 2012, 67 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations. The average over the past four quarters is 68 percent.

Shaw Group surged 60.8 percent to $44.91 after the engineering company agreed to be acquired by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co for about $3 billion in cash and stock.

Progenics Pharmaceuticals Inc plunged 43.6 percent to $6.09 and Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd tumbled 11.8 percent to $46.90 after U.S. health regulators declined to approve wider use of their drug for opioid-induced constipation and asked for more data.

Apple Inc climbed 1.9 percent to $596.29 to help lift the Nasdaq. Jury selection is due to begin on Monday in the United States in a high stakes patent battle between the iPad maker and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the culmination of over a year of pretrial jousting with billions of dollars in the balance.

Even With The Growth Of Web Marketing Direct Marketing Through ...

Direct marketing businesses are famous, marketing companies are the actual heart of an, and assists an organization survives. Immediate marketing businesses are actually aggressive and they know most of the ways in which they may target their customers and create a good market share for themselves. Internet marketing is also famous and many companies who use internet marketing can often come up with great ideas to produce a stir on the market. Often times, there is confusion regarding it really all depends upon the type of market you intend to target.Direct mailing organizations use emails and letters to promote a specific brand or a business and which type of marketing works the best. This can be an simple way of marketing since customers are held in balance immediately and sometimes it is easier and practical for the folks to know about a business and a manufacturer this way. Though internet marketing is famous presently there is still a whole lot of space for direct marketing since it still seems more possible and will bring more customers to your door. Knowing your customers is a very important thing and a study must be carryed out by direct mail firms to learn that which mode of marketing is most appreciated by your customers.Internet needs access and often when the host is down nothing can be achieved properly. With the server down a company may lose considerably with its marketing efforts and also find yourself losing clients. You will need to have seen that they are a kind of internet marketing and many times while you?re searching online there are countless advertisements showing on the side bar, these are banner adverts. Sometimes these advertisements frustrate people and these ads can actually hinder the job that you do so in order to avoid any disruption, immediate mail companies use letters and postcards.Direct marketing companies still earn a lot and these companies can do so much better at increasing market share and making customers aware of manufacturers as this provides customers great convenience and this convenience can be great for people. So in a nutshell direct marketing through the mail still works today and it is better to market through direct mail as this makes it easy for customers to know what is on offer in the market and for this and they don?t even have to make any effort to find this out as it just falls through their front door. Therefore, when you need to know which way is better to market and if it is direct marketing through mailing or is it by the support of internet, you could often say that most people whom do not have any access to the internet would never know about what you are giving. For this reason, direct marketing is the best way the best option and sometimes to market and make a company known by the most people. Direct marketing businesses would always know who to a target to and if so they can reach more people at one time and thus increase market share.

Ethanol Waiver Sought Amid Drought

Groups representing the livestock and poultry industry are petitioning the Obama administration to waive requirements for gasoline refineries to blend ethanol into their fuel production for one year.

The groups have asked the Environmental Protection Agency to suspend the practice in order to curb the rising cost of grain as extreme drought conditions spike feed costs for Midwestern farmers. In a conference call with reporters, industry representatives said the price of meat will continue to rise for consumers unless the waiver is granted.

"We're worried about having enough corn, soybeans, and other crops at any price to feed our animals," said Tom Super of the National Chicken Producers Council. "These aren't unfounded fears."

Citing USDA statistics, Super says a poor corn yield this year could result in a4 percent increase in food prices. The drought has forced the price of turkey alone up 50 percent.

John Burkel of the National Turkey Federation suggested the holiday season could see a disproportionate effect.

"You will see a drop in production across all the meats and prices that just put the consumer in a position where they can't afford to buy meat anymore, or very little of it." he said, adding, "At Thanksgiving they'll splurge, but they're not going to put the extra bird in the freezer."

The petition comes little over a week since poultry groups lost a challenge to the mandate in federal court, the latest in the spat between some farming organizations and the ethanol industry. Opponents of the biofuel contend the federal mandate for its inclusion in gasoline is a form of non-competitive subsidy.

But not all agricultural groups are on board. On Friday the National Farmers' Union, which represents both ranchers and produce growers, questioned the practicality of eliminating the mandate.

"NFU stands by the belief that concerns from the livestock sector and some members of Congress are unwarranted," it said in a statement, adding that "eliminating the [Renewable Fuel Standard] would reduce corn prices less than 5 percent."

The stat is referencing a study released by Iowa State University on the impact of the drought. On the call a meat industry spokesman said that seemingly small figure translated into roughly $1 billion in revenue for meat distributors.

Get more pure politics at ABC News.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

Bob Dineen of the Renewable Fuels Association says while they understand the farmers' plight, the only beneficiary to an ethanol suspension would be oil companies.

"Waiving the RFS won't bring the type of relief the livestock groups are seeking, nor will it result in significantly lower feed prices," Dineen maintains. "In fact, because ethanol plants also produce a high protein feed, limiting ethanol production will only further complicate drought related feed issues and costs."

The NFU and other groups have called for the creation of a federally owned grain reserve, similar to the one in place for petroleum. When questioned on the subject, a livestock representative on the conference call said their organizations were focused on more "immediate relief."

This week Congress expects to vote on a number of measures aimed at disaster relief for the drought, particularly for beef, pork, and poultry farms - sectors that are not partially shielded by government subsidies.

SPIRAL Your Kindness Let A Monster In music review by Finnforest

4 starsSuicide, fear, abuse, violence. It's the Spiral holiday album.

"For me, Kindness is probably the most intense listening experience I've had with Spiral. I remember listening to a rough cut of "The Man Who Never Left" late one evening after my wife had gone to bed. The room was completely dark and I came to a point in the song where Chris uses a very strange effect on his voice and whispers "There's only fear outside" over and over. It actually freaked me out. I love it when music works like that." -Aaron Frale, from the ProgArchives interview

"Your Kindness Let a Monster In" seems almost like some creature who willed itself into the Spiral world with ferocity. While the band were working on their epic "The Traveler" in the fall of 2011, they were detoured by this project. They made quick work of it in order to release it on Halloween, as the material was dark and appropriate, thus it became known as the Spiral holiday album. But then something strange happened. The Monster decided it wanted to be more than just a quick thought between "Capital" and "Traveler." It wanted the same love and attention that the RIP trilogy was getting. Like any good parents would do, Aaron and Chris returned their love and attention to the Monster, recording more material and re-recording existing parts. They re-released a new and final version in January 2012. While I never heard the previous version it was undoubtedly a good call to flesh out this work. It harkens back to the "Billy Jensen" album and is another real gem.

"Monster" succeeds so well at capturing the dark lyrical themes contained within. The music feels like it wants to withhold secrets, it gives you clues, but it always feels as if there is something hiding around the corner. It also feels constricting and confining, a monkey clinging to your back, pressuring you to keep your mouth shut if you want to remain alive. And yet it is Spiral in their most adventurous of spirits. While the first two RIP albums are very good they feel more structured and guitar-centric, more jam oriented. Monster has some of that, but like Jensen there is more textural variety, more surprises, more willingness to let the keyboard interrupt the jam for pure sound exploration. There is a great balance of light to heavy in both instruments and vocals. And there is superb flow to the album. It moves along like one sinister character shuffling down the alley, the five tracks all complimenting each other beautifully.

"Sticks and Stones" is fantastic, with forceful parts that build and dissolve into occasional sad melodic bits, especially great is the little guitar solo beginning around 5:50. Love those first chords and how sad they feel. "Jenny" has an elaborate beginning that sounds like Felicia's strings are back but I think this is a keyboard part. Completely ominous keys are joined by this repeating guitar motif that goes on and on. "Father" is the cool short track separating the four longer pieces, it cleanses the palate though doesn't lighten the mood. It features organ and this repetitive, doomy pattern which is very oppressive, then softened just a bit by piano. A fantastic moment! "The Man Who Never Left" captures the isolation and irrational fears of the agoraphobic character, using carefully crafted vocal treatments as mentioned above. Frightening and fascinating. While the comparisons to Jensen are understandable it must be acknowledged that Spiral have increased their sound palette and finesse with this particular venture. The keys, the heavy stoner guitar sound, the intense vocals, the soft interludes, these are the common Spiral ingredients and they are very effective tackling this difficult subject matter. I want to include the following description about the themes of the songs right from the band, as always the storytelling is very integral to the Spiral experience:

"I spent a lot of my childhood in a very small town. This album is my attempt to look back at the way the town worked from a more mature perspective. Everyone was very proud of their hospitality and friendliness, but it seemed like everyone knew some horrid secret about someone else. So and so's son shot himself out in the field (Sticks and Stones (The Suicide Song)) and so on. Also, when someone was strange or different they usually wanted to be left alone, which, of course, made everyone pay more attention to them. The Man Who Never Left is about an agoraphobic. Unfortunately, his fear of the outside world draws the outside world to him. All the local kids stare at him through his windows and ring his doorbell over and over. Jenny Hurts her Little Brother is about an unnatural relationship between a brother and sister living with their abusive father. And finally, when anything truly violent happens in a small town, it quickly passes into the stuff of legend (You Kindness Let a Monster In). I'm sure all of these things (and worse) happen in large cities, but in small towns every oddity, every strange taboo and act of violence is talked about over and over again until it becomes an oral tradition. I wanted to tell these stories like I heard them growing up, full of darkness and fear." -Chris Boat, from the PA interview

I feel no shame in being the resident Spiral fanboy. This is my kind of band, unique and with personality, and "Monster" is a real favorite. And again, another perfect album cover that captures the music.

Judge in Apple-Samsung case says patent drawings can 'speak for ...

The judge in a highly-anticipated trial over smartphones and tablets sided with Apple on Friday over how a jury should look at four key patents. The ruling means the jury will act as ?ordinary observers? instead of relying on detailed legal instructions to understand the patents.

A judge sided with Apple on Friday, saying she would not provide detailed ?instructions to a jury about how to interpret patent drawings that lay out claims to the iPad and iPhone. Instead, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said it would be up to the jurors to use ?the eye of an ordinary observer? to decide if Korean phone maker Samsung copied the drawings.

The ruling represents one of the final skirmishes before a closely-watched trial set to kick off Monday in San Jose near Apple?s headquarters. The California trial is the biggest showdown yet in a global struggle in which Apple is carpet-bombing Samsung with intellectual property claims in the hopes of removing Samsung products from store shelves and forcing it to pay massive damages.

The decision that the drawings can ?speak for themselves? is significant because it means the judge will not, as Samsung had hoped, provide detailed legal instructions about how to decipher the patents. Instead, the jurors will be asked to base their decision on the overall design and to give ?such attention as a purchaser usually gives.?

The drawings in question are from four Apple design patents. Each patent contains between two and 48 drawings that are used to illustrate how Apple owns features like the shape of the iPad and the black-colored surface of the iPhone (the three iPhone-related patents can be found here,?here and?here?while the iPad one is?here ). Here are some examples of the drawings the jurors will consider (note that the judge will, however, instruct them that the dotted lines indicate that Apple is not claiming that part of the design) :

The ruling that the jurors? should decide based on the overall impression of the drawings may strengthen Apple?s case that Samsung copied its designs. But if they do find copying, Samsung could still be off the hook if the jury (again acting as an ?ordinary observer?) decides the patents are obvious based on earlier tablet and smartphone designs. For instance, Samsung is arguing that Apple itself lifted design ideas from these Sony prototypes:

The design patent dispute is just the most high profile part of a case that also features a complicated mix of other intellectual property claims such as utility patents, trade dress and more. The trial, for which jury selection is to begin on Monday, will also address whether Apple infringed Samsung?s patents. Apple claims Samsung?s claims fail because they are based on so-called FRAND patents which companies must license because they part of an industry standard.

Headache - Headaches and migraines | Revista Women's Health

Who has not ever had a headache, maybe some other sporadically gets them frequently and others suffer chronically.

In the West you have 70% of the population and 30% chronically.

The headache should not be an element to be deleted without further, but an indicator of other damage.

Types of headache:

Due to its numerous manifestations there is currently a grade based on a standard unit of different types of headache. According to recent research, the headache would not be a single disease but a symptom, which is why I think it logical to classify separately consider the different major types.

Primary headaches: includes forms that are expressed with distinct characteristics but related causes are not always obvious which act indirectly in causing pain, this kind of headache can interfere with natural healing methods as discussed below.

Secondary headaches: differ from the previous one because it is cured with the elimination of organic cause is at the base and, therefore, the results.

Primary headaches:

This group will find three options:

  • Migraine (migraine)
  • Tension headache
  • Headache ?cluster?
  • Migraine

This may be the more aggressive variant have disabling. It mainly affects women, with an average four or five times higher compared with men and is characterized by throbbing pain in the middle of the head, made worse by physical activity. The duration of the crisis generally varies from 4 to 7 hours and rarely exceed 24 hours.

The pain is particularly evident in the orbital and temporal region, and almost always accompanied by dizziness, vomiting, intolerance to light and noise, sometimes dizziness, visual disturbances and altered consciousness.

Tension headache

Is this is perhaps the most common type of headache, include forms related to muscular contraction of the neck and back. May be occasional, recurrent, with periodic incidence (episodes of 30 minutes once a week) or chronic, when the discomfort is present more than six months a year and more than 15 days a month.

The pain is usually of moderate intensity, does not require the person concerned to remain in darkness and inactivity but even sometimes relieved by movement.

The causes that can trigger pain are varied:

  • Alteration in the jaw joint.
  • Abnormal jaw closure.
  • Incorrect posture maintained continuously.
  • Lack of rest.
  • Stress and emotional tension with immediate repercussions muscle.

The latter is the most common cause of these forms of headache: tension states are discharged mainly in the neck muscles of the back, which appear contracted and often have pain on palpitation. Migraine and tension headache can coexist altering or overlapping.

Headache ?cluster?

This is a type of headache exacerbation, recurrent, predictable in its beginning occurs at night with severe pain that affects part of the head over the entire eye and temple. The crisis takes about an hour and repeat ?cluster?, ie at intervals of two weeks.

This type of biochemical origin unknown, almost exclusively affects men between 30 and 40 years, professionally active, subject to constant nervous tension and stress. The crisis is usually accompanied by tearing and runny nose, redness of the conjunctiva, sweating on the forehead and face.

Secondary headaches:

This group of headache is related to specific pathologies of the structure of the head, the mere suspicion of its existence should lead to those who suffer to see the doctor for a checkup and make interventions on the specific pathology that can cause it.

Here we see the ways in which you configure the secondary headaches.

  • By meningitis
  • For subdural hematoma
  • For intracranial aneurysm
  • For trigeminal neuralgia
  • Posttraumatic
  • Glaucoma
  • For alteration of visual function
  • For acute rhinitis (cold)
  • Po allergic rhinitis
  • For otomastoiditis
  • By temporal arteritis.

Therapies:

To cure the headache is definitely essential, rather than taking painkillers, you must remove the causes of discomfort are the elements that trigger the headache. They are numerous physical, mental and emotional, in addition to the level that trigger pain and that should eliminate all or most of them to restore a proper balance in the body?s internal functions.

The initial steps to address the serious primary headaches:

  • Correct food and people are genetically predisposed to a poor diet could lead them to the onset of headache.
  • Correct constipation, constipation causes the body to absorb intestinal toxins that normally are evacuated quickly, these toxins typically trigger headache.
  • Release stress, elimination or reduction of stress and its serious impact on the body are essential.

Relieve headaches:

If we want to eliminate or alleviate the headache before analgesics take various therapies can be used

Rebirthing, yoga, shiatsu, homeopathy, herbal medicine, music therapy, gem therapy, color therapy, radionics, and magnet among others.

Combat headache with natural products

The headache is caused by inflammation of muscles or blood vessels that causes stimulation of the surrounding nerves that send pain messages to the brain. The juice of fruits such as machinery, mangosteen or acai can with their anti-inflammatory properties play an important role.

A choreographer is unhappy that his somber opening-ceremony segment was bypassed by NBC, which instead showed American viewers an interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

The segment was described as an "honest expression of the fear of approaching death." But some in the British press have interpreted it as being a tribute to victims of bomb attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 commuters and four suicide bombers on London's transit network. During the BBC live coverage of the ceremony, commentator Hazel Irvine made the connection while the dance was taking place: "The excitement of that moment in Singapore seven years ago when London won the games was tempered with great sorrow the very next day," when the terror attacks took place.

NBC said it had no indication that the segment was a reference to the terrorist attacks. Said choreographer Akram Khan, a Londoner: "I am really sad that I couldn't show the work in America, and that really upsets me, because I don't think it's any more or less than the other pieces. It brings to mind the question ... that maybe it's too truthful."

NBC aired the ceremony on a tape-delayed basis and made editing changes.

Chinese microbot walks on water, skims the surface of insect-inspired design

Water jumping microbot proves anything bugs can do, robots can do too

Bugs are creepy. You don't need to be an entomophobe to empathize with that sentiment. But bugs are also inspiring -- to researchers in China, that is. Taking a cue from nature, a team of engineers from the country's School of Chemical Engineering and Technology have devised a microbot weighing just 0.02 lbs (11 grams) that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water without tanking. How'd they do it? Well, by using a highly repellent foam coating, the strider-like bot's legs are able to stay afloat with every 5.5 inch (14 cm) leap it makes, buffering the force that would normally plunge it below the H20. The creation of this hydrophobic mini-insectoborg isn't exactly the first of its kind, other aquatic gliders have come before, but this itty bitty fella's the first to successfully and repeatedly hop along an aqueous top. Unfortunately, there's no video demo for you to feast your eyes upon, so you'll just have to take our word for it.
