Insert Coin: TouchKeys overlay brings whole new meaning to 'tickling the ivories'

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin TouchKeys wants to bring multitouch to musicians with stickon keyboard

Keyboards haven't changed much in the last, oh, few hundred years or so. You play a note by hitting and releasing it, use a pedal to sustain and change volume through the high-tech means of "bashing harder." TouchKeys wants to give you much more control with its touch sensitive, DIY stick-on overlays that can even sense multi-touch. While similar to what we've seen recently with the Roli Seaboard (which has rubberized keys that let you bend notes), TouchKeys can be added to most keyboards and would let you do even more, in theory. Similar to a smartphone screen, it senses up and down or side-to-side finger movements with up to three touches, all of which can be mapped mapped to different sounds or effects. For instance, you can create a vibrato by shaking your hand side-to-side, move up and down to bend notes, use multi-touch pinch and slide to change midi mappings, or play different sounds by multi-tapping.

Most of the kits sold will be DIY, meaning they'll come as self-installed peel-and-stick keys and sensors that fit standard-sized keyboards, starting at £330 for 25 keys. You'll also have to open up the keyboard to tuck in the narrow controller, but the company said it hasn't seen any models that don't work yet. If you're not inclined to futz around, you'll be able to buy a limited number of pre-installed kits starting at £660 with a Novation Impulse 25 keyboard. TouchKeys is looking for a relatively modest £30,000 as its funding goal, so if you're looking for the latest musical edge, hit the source.

Man pours hot oil on girlfriend

A 26-year-old man from Ulhasnagar, who had been spurned by his girlfriend, allegedly flung hot oil on the young woman on Saturday evening.
The 21-year-old girl, who suffered injuries on the cheek, hand and leg, has been admitted to hospital. The boy, a vada-pav vendor, is absconding.

A case of ?attempt to murder? has been registered against Telreja at Central Line police station.

The incident took place at the clinic where the girl, Radha (name changed), works as a compounder. Radha had recently started avoiding the accused, Ajit Telreja, her boyfriend of five years, as her parents had disapproved of their relationship.

On Saturday evening, Telreja barged into the clinic carrying oil in a flask. He allegedly hurled the piping hot oil on Radha. The police said they suspect Telreja, who runs a wayside stall, carried oil from the pan he used to prepare vada-pav and bhajiyas.

One of Radha?s colleagues, who happened to be standing near her, has also sustained injuries.

Senior police inspector Ashok Sakpal said that the girl had recently discussed her marriage plan with Telreja.

?Her parents disapproved of the alliance as Telreja was an alcoholic and he earned a living by selling foodstuff on the pavement,? said Sakpal. ?The girl decided to toe her parents? line so as not to shatter the peace at home. As the girl started avoiding him, Telreja decided to get even with her.?
Sakpal said they are questioning Telreja?s relatives to locate his whereabouts.

The practice got off to a bumpy start, sometimes extending lives for only days, rather than the years we now expect. But it was soon prey to its own success: By the 1980s, there clearly weren?t enough organs to go around. Hospitals needed ways to decide who would live and who would die, and early criteria included a tally of who had been in the hospital the longest and notions of ?social worth??income, education, community standing.http://news.yahoo.com/fairest-way-dispense-donated-organs-095914746.htmlSat, 27 Jul 2013 06:03:37 -0400National Journalfairest-way-dispense-donated-organs-095914746America Is Split by the NSA, But Not Along the Usual Partisan LinesSomething strangely refreshing about the way the National Security Agency data-mining revelations have played out is how it has blurred the usual partisan divides. This was especially apparent Wednesday, when the House voted on an amendment to defund the NSA's spying apparatus. It was Republican-led, but backed by some Democrats. A strange grouping?including the White House; Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn.; and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.?all spoke out against the measure. Content owners warn Congress of ?fair use creep,? draw ridicule ...

Groups representing the movie, music and photography industries testified before Congress on Thursday, and called on the government to consider changing laws to do more to address piracy and file-sharing.

The testimony, which took place before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, is part of a larger review?by Congress of America?s copyright policy. The review is significant because it will help shape the rules for culture and creativity on the internet in coming decades.

The proceedings included a gimmick in which members of Congress a movie clip of various 3D content, followed by a warning that such creativity could be snuffed out without stronger laws:??If an environment exists that does not provide adequate copyright protection and blockbuster films become unaffordable and unprofitable due to the threat of piracy, this new and thriving 3D industry will be significantly hampered,? studio executive William Sherak told the subcommittee.

The industry groups also repeatedly invoked ?fair use creep? to claim that copyright is being undermined by a long-standing legal rule that lets people make free use of creative works for purposes like scholarship or reporting. The phrase, however, drew mockery on Twitter:

Such comments reflect frustrations among librarians and groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation that the copyright review appears to be entirely tilted toward large industry groups without considering the public interest.

Copyright law has become contentious in recent years, in part because Congress, in response to lobbying from companies like Disney, has dramatically expanded the terms of copyright and removed works like ?Peter and the Wolf? from the public domain.

The subcommittee will hear from members of the tech industry next week.

APARECIDA, Brazil (AP) ? A crowd roared and church bells rang as Pope Francis' helicopter arrived Wednesday in Aparecida for the first full day of activities on his inaugural international trip as pontiff.

Tens of thousands of faithful flocked to the tiny town of Aparecida, tucked into an agricultural region halfway between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, where he is to celebrate the first public Mass of his trip in a massive basilica dedicated to the nation's patron saint.

Thousands of pilgrims hoping to get into the Mass braved cold winds to camp out overnight in a line that snaked around the church complex.

Some sought shelter from the Southern Hemisphere winter chill beneath tarps while others wrapped themselves in blankets and sleeping bags.

And many left offerings to the Virgin of Aparecida, Brazil's patron saint.

Lena Halfeld, a 65-year-old housewife, paused to add her offering to a cardboard box filled with stuffed animals, leg braces and other personal objects. She deposited an embossed invitation to her niece's December wedding, which she was praying for the virgin to bless.

"I have real faith in the powers of the Virgin of Aparecida," said Halfeld, adding she had made the hours-long trip to the church once a week for a year during her husband's recent illness. "Now he's cured, so I owe it all to her. I can't think of a more wonderful setting to see the new pope."

Francis is in Brazil for World Youth Day, a church event that brings together young Catholics from around the world roughly every three years. Approximately 350,000 young pilgrims signed up to officially take part in the Youth Day events and the pope's arrival generated such frenzy that crowds mobbed his motorcade as he drove through Rio.

In Aparecida, 16-year-old Natalia Pereira, a high school student from Sao Paulo state, called the cold rain she braved to flock to the basilica a "test of faith."

"I've been up all night in line, I'm soaked to the bone and freezing but I'm so excited that it's worth it," said Pereira, who tried to huddle from the drizzle beneath a friend's oversized umbrella. "This is my first time seeing a pope and this was an opportunity of a lifetime for me. I wasn't about to let it go because of a little rain."

Release date of iPhone 5S, iPad 5 and low-cost iPhone by October claims one analyst

No Retina iPad Mini coming this year according to one analyst, but low-cost iPhone and a new iPad will join the iPhone 5S release date by October 2013.

JULY 22, 2013, 11:59 PM. Article by Carlo Raphael Diokno.

Apple will launch multiple devices this year, and it looks like the Retina iPad Mini is not in tow. As reported by Mac Rumors on Monday, seasoned Apple analyst?Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI claims that the iPhone 5S will launch by end of September ? similar to last year?s iPhone 5 launch date window. Coming alongside the new iPhone according to Kuo is the iPad 5 with iPad Mini-like build quality, possibly with anodized aluminum and more rounded corners, plus, Apple will reportedly launch its mid-range iPhone with plastic build by end of September too.

Warlow meets his maker on 'True Blood'

TV

Image: Bill from "True Blood"

John P. Johnson / HBO

Hey, Warlow! Who's your daddy?

Sunday was a Father's Day of sorts on "True Blood," but it sure wasn't a holiday. Instead, it was time to take a closer look at the dads of Bon Temps and all the dark drama that surrounds them.

Dad? Mom? Billith?
It all started when Sookie had her deadly ball-o-light aimed at Warlow. But rather than firing at will, she gave the ancient vamp a chance to explain himself. He told her he was no danger to her at all. In fact, that whole killing-her-parents-thing from so long ago? It was just a big misunderstanding. He didn't want to kill them, but they wanted to kill her -- so he didn't really have a choice.

Huh?

After hearing that bombshell, Sookie slammed Warlow with enough light that the sensation reverberated all the way to his maker. And just who sired the oldest living half-vampire? Well?

"As your maker, I command you: Come with me," Bill, suddenly on the scene, said to Warlow.

Huh?

As it turns out, proto-vamp Lilith made Warlow what he is, so Billith is his proud pop. Bill's also the man still looking for some magical fairy blood -- and it doesn't get much more magical than what Warlow has.

Still a father to one fairy
As for Bill's other progeny, Jessica, she looked on with horror as Andy Bellefleur discovered his dead daughters strewn all over the living room of the Compton estate. She beat a hasty retreat just a little too soon to see that there was actually one survivor among fae -- barely.

A desperate Andy carried No. 1 (or was it 2 or 3 or maybe 4 -- he really should have named those girls) back to the station and dished up some V, fresh from the evidence locker. It was enough to save her.

Son of a dog
Alcide had his dad safely by his side as he continued his quest to find Sam the shifter, Sam's pesky new pal and little Emma. After talking up the locals at a backwoods bar (to little affect), Alcide decided to turn to dad for advice.

But Jackson just had a question for his son. "Are you doing this 'cause you think it's the right thing to do, or are you doing it to impress that piece of ??" Ahem! He meant Rikki, the official pack troublemaker.

With those words barely out of Jackson's mouth, Alcide threw him to the floor and warned him to obey his pack master.

Just one problem with that. Jackson never joined his son's pack -- which seems like reason enough not to tell Alcide about his Sam-spotting the following morning.

Devoted dad
When Eric learned that the LAVTF goons took Pam to Vamp Camp (now home to half the fangers in Bon Temp -- including Jess), he and Tara turned themselves in.

It almost seemed like a good idea; that is until the governor (with more than a little help from the former Mrs. Steve Newlin and the current vampire Steve Newlin) decided to get revenge on Eric for turning his daughter into a member of the undead.

Eric was put in a room with a stake and forced to face off against his only other progeny -- Pam.

In an earlier psych experiment, Pam claimed she felt nothing for he maker, but it was clear by the looks on both of their faces, that was neither true nor mutual.

Deadly daddy
Sookie was desperate to find out if what Warlow said about her parents was true. That's the only reason she would possibly consider asking Lafayette to reach out to the great beyond and get the inside scoop. After all, when he pulls his Miss Cleo routine, things rarely go well.

And this time was no exception. It seems Papa Stackhouse really did want to kill Sookie -- to keep Warlow from getting his fairy-vampire hands on her. To make matter worse, he still wants to kill her. Now that he's in control of Lafayette's body, he just might do it too.

Expect all of the daddy drama to carry over to next week. After all, Eric has a big choice to make, Andy has a big loss to get revenge for and Sookie's dad still has some work to do if he's really going to keep her down.

(AP) ? Opera singer Placido Domingo says he has left a hospital in Madrid after spending five days there recovering from a lung artery blockage.

Domingo said "Going home" on his Twitter account, attaching a photograph dated Saturday of him opening a car door. Nicholas Marko, personal assistant to Domingo, confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday that the singer had left the hospital.

The tenor's son, Alvaro Domingo has said he expected his father to spend three weeks recuperating in Madrid following his release from hospital, and that the 72-year-old singer wasn't contemplating retirement.

Domingo canceled six dates in Madrid this month after being hospitalized Monday. Doctors said a blood clot caused the pulmonary embolism.

Domingo has maintained an active schedule after recovering from colon cancer surgery in 2010.

Math and Science Popular With Students Until They Realize They're Hard

[unable to retrieve full-text content]First time accepted submitter HonorPoncaCityDotCom writes "Khadeeja Safdar reports in the WSJ that researchers who surveyed 655 incoming college students found that while math and science majors drew the most interest initially, not many students finished with degrees in those subjects. Students who dropped out didn't do so because they discovered an unexpected amount of the work and because they were dissatisfied with their grades. "Students knew science was hard to begin with, but for a lot of them it turned out to be much worse than what they expected," says Todd R. Stinebrickner, one of the paper's authors. "What they didn't expect is that even if they work hard, they still won't do well." The authors add that the substantial overoptimism about completing a degree in science can be attributed largely to students beginning school with misperceptions about their ability to perform well academically in science. ""If more science graduates are desired, the findings suggest the importance of policies at younger ages that lead students to enter college better prepared (PDF) to study science.""
