Maize in diets of people in coastal Peru dates to 5,000 years ago

Feb. 25, 2013 ? For decades, archaeologists have struggled with understanding the emergence of a distinct South American civilization during the Late Archaic period (3000-1800 B.C.) in Peru. One of the persistent questions has been the role of agriculture and particularly corn (maize) in the evolution of complex, centralized societies. Up until now, the prevailing theory was that marine resources, not agriculture and corn, provided the economic engine behind the development of civilization in the Andean region of Peru.

Now, breakthrough research led by Field Museum curator Dr. Jonathan Haas is providing new resolution to the issue by looking at microscopic evidence found in soil, on stone tools, and in coprolites from ancient sites and dated with over 200 Carbon-14 dates.

After years of study, Haas and his colleagues have concluded that during the Late Archaic, maize (Zea mays, or corn) was indeed a primary component in the diet of people living in the Norte Chico region of Peru, an area of remarkable cultural florescence in 3rd millennium B.C. Their research is the subject of a paper that appears in the online Early Edition issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) the week of February 25, 2013..

"This new body of evidence demonstrates quite clearly that the very earliest emergence of civilization in South America was indeed based on agriculture as in the other great civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China," said Haas.

Haas and his team focused on sites in the desert valleys of Pativilca and Fortaleza north of Lima where broad botanical evidence pointed to the extensive production, processing and consumption of maize between 3000 and 1800 B.C. They studied a total of 13 sites. The two most extensively studied sites were Caballete, about six miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and consisting of six large platform mounds arranged in a "U" shape, and the site of Huaricanga, about 14 miles inland and consisting one very large mound and several much smaller mounds on either side.

The scientists targeted several areas at the sites including residences, trash pits, ceremonial rooms, and campsites. A total of 212 radiocarbon dates were obtained in the course of all the excavations.

Macroscopic remains of maize (kernels, leaves, stalks, and cobs) were rare.

However, the team looked deeper and found an abundance of microscopic evidence of maize in various forms in the excavations. One of the clearest markers was the abundance of maize pollen in the prehistoric soil samples. While maize is grown in the area today, they were able to rule out modern day contamination because modern maize pollen grains are larger and turn dark red when stain is applied. Also, modern soil samples consistently contain pollen from the Australian Pine (Casuarinaceae Casuarina), a plant which is an invasive species from Australia never found in prehistoric samples.

A majority of the soil samples analyzed came from trash pits associated with residential architecture. Other samples were taken from places such as room floors and construction debris. Of the 126 soil samples (not counting stone tools and coprolites) analyzed, 61 contained Z. mays pollen. (In fact, Z. mays was the second most common pollen found in the total of all samples, behind only pollen from cattails which have wind-pollinated flowers.) This is consistent with the percentage of maize pollen found in pollen analyses from sites in other parts of the world where maize is a major crop and constitutes the primary source of calories in the diet.

Haas and his colleagues also analyzed residues on stone tools used for cutting, scraping, pounding, and grinding. The tools were examined for evidence of plant residues, particularly starch grains and phytoliths (plant silica bodies). Of the 14 stone tools analyzed, 11 had maize starch grains on the working surfaces and two had maize phytoliths.

Coprolites (preserved fecal material) provide the best direct evidence of prehistoric diet. Among 62 coprolites analyzed of all types -- 34 human, 16 domesticated dog, and others from various animals -- 43 (or 69 percent) contained maize starch grains, phytoliths, or other remains. Of the 34 human coprolites, 23 (or 68 percent) contained evidence of maize. (The second most common grain in humans came from sweet potatoes.) Coprolites also showed that fish, mostly anchovies, did provide the primary protein in the diet, but not the calories.

The researchers concluded that the prevalence of maize in multiple contexts and in multiple sites indicates this domesticated food crop was grown widely in the area and constituted a major portion of the local diet, and it was not used just on ceremonial occasions. The research ultimately confirms the importance of agriculture in providing a strong economic base for the rise of complex, centralized societies in the emergence of the world's civilizations.

2nd blizzard bearing down on Plains region

DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) ? A second major winter storm was bearing down on the central Plains, forcing cancellations and sending public works crews scrambling for salt and sand supplies less than a week after another system dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the region.

National Weather Service officials in Kansas issued blizzard warnings and watches through late Monday ahead of the strong storm system that's packing snow and high winds. The storm has been tracking across western Texas toward Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

"We're expecting more wind with this storm," said Jeff Johnson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Dodge City, Kan. "Snow amounts are varying, but we could see upward of a foot across south-central Kansas with lesser amounts across west-central and central Kansas."

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback amended the state of emergency declaration he signed last week to include the new storm.

"This storm has the potential to be more dangerous than last week's storm," said Brownback, who held a briefing Sunday night along with emergency officials in his state to warn residents about the weather.

He urged motorists to "stay off the road unless it's absolutely critical" but said drivers who must travel should pack their charged cellphones and emergency kits containing food, water, blankets, road flares and shovels.

The region was hit by a massive storm last week that dumped a foot of snow in some sections, closed airports and caused numerous accidents.

"It would have been nice if we'd had a few days to recover, to do some equipment rehab," Joe Pajor, deputy director of public works in Wichita, Kan., told The Wichita Eagle. The city saw its second-highest snowfall ever Thursday with 14.2 inches.

Other totals from the Thursday snowstorm included 18 inches in the southern Kansas town of Zenda, 17 inches in Hays, Kan., about 13 inches in northeast Missouri and 12 inches of snow in parts of Kansas City.

Steve Corfidi, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said the storm also will affect southern states and could spawn tornadoes Tuesday in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Georgia.

"It definitely will be one of the more significant events of the season, the winter season, absolutely," Corfidi told The Associated Press. "Both in winter weather and severe weather potential, and rain, down in the southeast United States."

More than a foot of snow is possible from the Texas Panhandle, across the Oklahoma Panhandle and into Kansas and possibly Missouri as the storm moves eastward from the southwestern United States.

While snowfall is expected to taper off by Monday afternoon, wind gusts of up to 35 mph will remain a hazard, said Sarah Johnson, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service's Amarillo, Texas, office.

Pajor told the Wichita newspaper the new storm "looks worse than the last one" and that sand and salt supplies are low because of last week's record storm, as are the number of locations where snow can be transported off city streets. He said the plowing strategy for the new blizzard may have to involve plowing snow into the center of arterial streets, and cutting traffic to one lane each direction.

He also said streets won't be treated with the city's limited sand and salt supplies until the snow ends and plowing is under way.

The threat of the pending storm forced cancellations Sunday and Monday in Kansas and Missouri, including the championship basketball tournament for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association, which rescheduled the tournament for Tuesday in Park City, Kan.

Matt Lehenbauer, emergency management director for Woodward County, Okla., said he expected rain or snow to begin there Sunday evening and forecast up to a foot of snow and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

"We're expecting white-out conditions," he told the AP.

He said there is plenty of salt and sand on hand to help clear roads, but the conditions may cause delays.

"We may not get the roads cleared until midday Tuesday if we get the expected amount of snow and wind. As it's falling, in the blizzard-like conditions, we just won't be able to keep up," he said.

WSJ Google to sell touchscreen Chromebooks later this year

Citing sources "familiar with the matter," the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has developed the first Chromebooks with touchscreens. A firm launch date for the laptops is MIA, but the WSJ claims that they'll hit shelves "later this year." If the notebooks do indeed pan out, Chromebook fans will finally get in on the touch-enabled action that Windows 8 hardware has been enjoying since last year.

Matt Riddle sorry for positive test at UFC 149, but wants to push for change on pot ban

Matt Riddle scored a decision win over Che Mills at UFC on Fuel 7 this past weekend. It's his second straight win after a win over Chris Clements at UFC 149 was overturned because Riddle tested positive for marijuana metabolites. He was angry after the positive test because Riddle has a medical marijuana card from Nevada, where he lives.

Riddle mended fences with the UFC brass while in England for his fight, as well.

"I actually talked to [UFC VP of regulatory affairs] Marc Ratner this past weekend in London," Riddle said to MMA Junkie Radio. "I kind of apologized because you know, I can't use medical marijuana. They can use TRT, and I've kind of been like ? I've been on the phone with Marc, and he's been like, 'There's nothing we can really do about it. You can't do it. The commissions don't respect your license.' I was kind of like, 'That sucks, bro,' and I was kind of mad at him, but it's not up to him. It's up to the other athletic commissions, and the UFC is doing the best they can to make them happy and to abide by their rules when they go over to Brazil and Europe when those places don't have athletic commissions."

I don't have much sympathy for fighters testing positive for a substance they know is banned, no matter what it is. Though Riddle's medical marijuana card allowed him to use it in Nevada, he should have asked well in advance what it meant for his fight in Canada. Marijuana shouldn't be banned, but it is. Fighters don't have to like the rules, but they do have to follow them.

But this is an issue the state commissions will need to address soon. Marijuana was recently legalized for recreational use in Washington and Colorado. 18 other states, including California and Nevada, allow medical marijuana or have decriminalized the drug. Cities are moving towards changing laws, as well. Chicago now gives tickets for pot possession instead of arrests.

Riddle says he will continue to push for changes in the rules. With marijuana becoming increasingly legal, and little proof that marijuana is a performance enhancer, there's no good reason for commissions to test for it.

YouTube Files Appeal Against Regulator In Russia Over Content Blocked By New Firewall

YouTube russia screen shotGoogle this week fired off one of the first high profile tests of Russia's controversial new firewall -- erected November 1, 2012 to block child porn, drugs and suicide content; but seen by critics as a route for the government to block whatever else it chooses. Google's YouTube operation in Russia has filed an appeal against the Russian regulator for blocking YouTube content. The appeal, filed on February 11 by YouTube LLC, concerns the?blacklisting of a video that showed how to apply Halloween makeup: because it shows how to make a wound, Roscomnadzor (Russia's consumer watchdog) also deemed that it encouraged suicide and suicidal tendencies. The video is embedded below.

Apple makes MacBook Pro with Retina display faster and more affordable

Apple has just announced some changes to their industry-leading Mac Book Pro with Retina display lineup, including a new, lower starting price, and updated processors. According to Apple:

Apple is making the MacBook Pro with Retina display faster and more affordable with updated processors and lower starting prices. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now starts at $1,499 for 128GB of flash, and $1,699 for a new 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now features a faster 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, and the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook comes with a new 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory. Apple today also announced that the 13-inch MacBook Air? with 256GB of flash has a new lower price of $1,399.

I've been using the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro since it was announced at WWDC 2012 last year, and it's the best computer I've ever used. It's so good I barely go near my Mac Pro anymore, and my MacBook Air has been retired. The only exception is the Intel HD GPU, which is redlined by Retina, but hopefully that gets solved in future generations.

At a lower starting price and with faster CPU options, it sounds even better. Anyone hitting the order button?

Anti-M?llerian hormone predicts IVF success

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Women with a high concentration of anti-M?llerian hormone stand a better chance of giving birth after in vitro fertilization, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

Anti-M?llerian hormone (AMH) is produced by the ovaries. The study found women with high AMH levels were 2.5 times more likely to have a successful IVF cycle than women of a similar age with low levels of the hormone. AMH levels were a predictor of pregnancy and live birth, even when the mother's age and egg production were taken into account.

Although a growing body of research has pinpointed AMH levels as an indicator of the number of eggs remaining in a woman's ovaries, this study is the first to demonstrate AMH levels are directly connected to birth and pregnancy rates, regardless of the number of eggs retrieved.

"For women who are struggling to get pregnant, a high AMH level should be very reassuring," said Thomas Brodin, MD, of Uppsala University in Sweden and lead author of the study. "High levels of this hormone mean there is a greater chance they have plenty of healthy eggs remaining to support a pregnancy."

Researchers concluded high AMH levels are associated with successful IVF treatment because the hormone levels reveal important information about the quality as well as the quantity of eggs left in a woman's ovaries. Women who have high AMH levels are likely to have a high proportion of eggs capable of developing into healthy embryos, Brodin said.

The prospective cohort study tracked 892 women who underwent IVF treatment at the Carl von Linn? Clinic in Uppsala between 2008 and 2011. The participants underwent a total of 1,230 IVF cycles. AMH levels in the participants' blood were measured prior to treatment.

The study found that women were more likely to have a successful treatment outcome as their AMH levels increased. Women who had AMH levels above 2.94 ng/ml had the highest birth rates. The effect leveled out when AMH levels surpassed 5 ng/ml.

Although researchers did not find a cut-off point below which women could not get pregnant, IVF success rates dropped substantially as AMH levels declined. Among the study participants who had AMH levels below 0.2 ng/ml, 53 IVF cycles resulted in only 18 embryo transfers and the birth of three children.

The study found reason for optimism among women who have polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition normally associated with ovulation problems. Women who have this condition tend to have high AMH levels.

"Our data suggests women who have polycystic ovaries are likely to be good candidates for IVF," Brodin said. "Along with high AMH levels, this group tends to have a significant supply of eggs remaining in the ovaries."

Other researchers working on the study include: N. Hadziosmanovic and L. Berglund of Uppsala Clinical Research Center, and M. Olovsson and J. Holte of Uppsala University.

Cooking Light Recipes: Quick and Healthy Menu Maker for iPhone and iPad review

It's Fitness Month here at iMore and Mobile Nations and part of getting in shape involves eating better which is why this week we're focusing on nutrition. When it comes to nutrition, the first step is to say goodbye fast food and eating out, and hello to healthy home-cooked meals. One such app to help you with this endeavor is Cooking Light Recipes: Quick and Healthy Menu Maker by Time Inc.

Cooking Light Recipes features more than 300 healthy chicken, beef, pork, fish, and vegetarian entrees, sides, and desserts. It includes gorgeous, mouth-watering photos making it easy to agree that a healthy choice is a smart choice.

The layout of Cooking Light focuses on the photos of dishes as each one takes up most of the screen. The bar at the top shows the name of the entree and what category it's from. If you tap on the category, a list will drop down with the other options. You can also simply swipe up on the photo to jump to the next category. Swiping left and right will advance between recipes in the category.

At the bottom of the screen, there are 4 different dishes to tap on: entree, two sides, and dessert. Tapping on one will change the category type in the upper left corner. All four of the dishes make up your menu. If you want to quickly have Cooking Light choose a menu for you, simple tap Suggested Menu on the photo. To the right of the menu, you'll find information about the menu including its calorie count and how much sodium and saturated fat there is.

To view a recipe, tap the See Recipe button on the photo. From here, you can see a list of ingredients as well as the directions for cooking it. On the iPad, all the information is displayed at once, and on the iPhone, you must navigate through tabs. Both approaches are perfect for each device.

Included with the recipes are how much time you must spend "hands-on" as well as how much total time is needed, including cooking time where you are not physically doing anything. You can also find the nutritional information for the dish.

Cooking Light is very well designed and includes great dishes and lots of information. What it doesn't include, however, is a shopping list. Sure, you can see a list of ingredients for each dish, but no one wants to have to jump between recipes while grocery shopping to see what they need. The inability to check items off a list is also annoying for shoppers. I was very disappointed when I learned that Cooking Light doesn't include an easy-to-create shopping list.

The good

  • Gorgeous, mouth-watering photography
  • Healthy choices
  • Over 300 recipes
  • Beef, lamb, fish, pasta, port, poultry, and vegetarian entrees
  • Suggested menu for each entree that includes two sides and a dessert
  • Mark recipes and menus as favorites
  • Cooking, shopping, and nutrition tips

The bad

  • No shopping list
  • No search feature
  • Can't really share recipes. Can only share a teaser and link to the app.
  • Doesn't support iPhone 5's larger screen

The bottom line

Cooking Light is a great cooking app for the health-conscious chef with beautiful photography, easy-to-follow recipes, and an awesome menu builder. If only it included a shopping list, search feature, and support for the iPhone 5, Cooking Light would be nearly perfect.

Poisoned lotto winner's brother sought more tests

CHICAGO (AP) ? The brother of a Chicago man poisoned with cyanide shortly after winning the lottery said Monday he is the family member who asked authorities to reconsider the initial finding that his sibling had died of natural causes.

Imtiaz Kahn said he had nightmares about his brother before his death and that his suspicions about the death lead him to push coroner's officials to conduct more test. Urooj Khan, 46, died July 20 as he was about to collect his $425,000 in Illinois State Lottery winnings.

Imtiaz Khan said Monday in a telephone interview that he began demanding more tests be conducted immediately after coroner's officials said his brother had died of natural causes.

Further tests revealed in November that Urooj Khan had been poisoned. His body was exhumed in January for more testing.

Khan's widow, Shabana Ansari, and other relatives have denied any role in his death and expressed a desire to learn the truth.

Urooj Khan had moved to the U.S. from his home in Hyderabad, India, in 1989, setting up several dry cleaning businesses and buying into some real estate investments.

Despite having foresworn gambling after making the haj pilgrimage to Mecca in 2010, Khan bought a lottery ticket in June. He said winning the lottery meant everything to him and that he planned to use his winnings to pay off mortgages, expand his business and donate to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

He was just days from receiving his winnings when he died before dawn July 20.

The night before, Khan ate dinner with his wife, daughter and father-in-law at their house. Sometime that night, Khan awoke feeling ill. He died the next morning at a hospital.

Khan died without a will, opening the door to a court battle. The businessman's widow and siblings fought for months over his estate, including the lottery check.

Lumio desk lamp takes light reading literally (video)

Image

With the future of reading heading squarely in the direction of electronic devices, what to do with the old timey book form? Build a lamp, of course. During a recent visit to the City by the Bay, we popped into the TechShop hackerspace and were introduced to Max Gunawan, the designer behind Lumio (not to be confused with a certain smartphone line of similar name). The product, developed in that very space, offers up a cool take on the desktop lamp, fitting it into a wooden, old timey-looking book form. Open it up and the pages fan out into what looks like a paper lantern.

It's an LED light powered by a lithium ion battery that'll give you around eight hours on a charge. Due to the foldable nature of the Lumio, the device is portable and can be opened into a number of configurations, to suit your needs. Gunawan is a couple of days away from launching a Kickstarter page for the project, in hopes of getting together $60,000. Interested funders will be able to pick one up for around $95 -- wait for it to come to market, and that price will jump to around $125 or $135.

After the break, check out a video of Gunawan giving us the lowdown on Lumio.

Dog Writer's Association of America Dinner | Steve Dale's Pet World

Dog Writer's Association of America Dinner
Speaking at the 2012 DWAA Banquet in New York City's Affinia Hotel

I was honored to be inducted in the Dog Writer's Association of America Hall of Fame in 2012 (their youngest inductee ever)! As I had done several times before, I spoke at the swanky banquet (for decades held the night before the Westminster Dog Show) as well, as I will again tonight, February 10.

Here's a portion of what I had to say:

"As my newspaper columns are syndicated and in around 100 papers - in the paper and online, and I write for USA Weekend....Many millions read what I writes. And using social media and email, I hear back about what they have to say, or ask me about. We'll you'll see what I mean.

"Dear Steve, How do I stop my terrier from chasing squirrels in the back yard?"

My reply. hope for literate squirrels who can read a sign that says, "Danger, Dog in Yard."

Here are more:

*"Do I sleep with my dog, or does my dog sleep with me?"

*"My dog isn?t the most friendly but my 7-year-old Cocker Spaniel mix loves my piano teacher. Katie, the dog, howls when I play the piano? Mrs. Worthington then winks at her. Seriously, could they be conspiring against me?"

*"On a walk with our dog, Payton, we met two lesbians ? you could tell, you know the type. They had a female Miniature Schnauzer named Butch. This is wrong. Really isn?t it against the humane society to make their dog into lesbian?"

I do receive many letters which are touching.

*"Dear Steve, your advice was perfect ? we?ve kept the dog with my mom, and she?s perked up a lot now that she has her little best friend back. There may come a time when as the dog ages, we?ll need a caretaker for my mom and her dog. Your were right, they will enjoy the rest of their years together. Seeing them with one another makes your heart melt."

"Dear Steve Dale, My name Is Evin Janik and I'm in 7th grade and I live in Batavia IL, I?m doing a research project on Pit Bulls because I have a 9 month old Pit Bull named Ollie and an American Bulldog named Ruby. Today at school while researching I read one of your articles and decided to email you. ?I have now looked through most of your Pit Bull articles and I am sure to use most everyone for my project. I appreciate your determination to save the Pit bull name and your love for the breed. I'm sure all the Pit bulls appreciate it!"

Following story in USA Weekend?about the benefits of sharing your home and life with a dog?.and received this note.

"You stupid **expletive***!!! How you can think having an ***expletive***expletive****, dog to ****expletive****all over might make life better? We?re fine ? we don?t need an ***expletive****expletive dog. You?re a ****expletive**** you ***expletive!****

my reply: "Dear Sir, thank you for your ?articulate? letter, which by the way, illustrates perfectly why I often prefer dogs to people."

PFT: Ravens' Williams escapes fine for pushing ref

SnowGetty Images

With snow piled up in Massachusetts, Field Yates of ESPNBoston.com looks at the top five snow games in Patriots history.? (Raiders fans won?t need more than one guess to figure out which one lands at the top of the list.)

Bills LB coach Chuck Driesbach is surprised the 49ers didn?t use the read-option more in the Super Bowl.

Here?s a closer look at guys the Jets have added in the offseason, and who have a slim chance of being with the team in September.

The Dolphins conducted a Junior Training Camp for roughly 500 students at Treasure Island Elementary School.

The Browns conducted their second annual Black History Month Panel Discussion, featuring inspiring accounts from John Wooten, Bobby Mitchell, Paul Wiggin, and Greg Pruitt.

The Bengals have another strong home slate, with their three AFC North rivals, four other 2012 playoff teams (Packers, Vikings, Colts, Patriots), and the Jets coming to town.

Half of the Steelers? offensive coaching staff has left since offensive coordinator Todd Haley arrived.

Complicating the Ravens? Thursday night regular-season opener is the fact that the Orioles host the White Sox that same night.? (Given their long history of successful performances and achievements, the Ravens should be careful to properly respect the Orioles.)

Titans players welcome the edge that Gregg Williams brings to the team.? (The jet-black George Michael goatee is merely a bonus.)

Texans WR DeVier Posey has undergone surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered during a playoff loss to the Patriots.

Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch keeps a copy of Jon Gruden?s football resume taped to the medicine cabinet in his bathroom.? (Um, Jedd?? That?s probably not something to talk about publicly.? Or privately.? Or ever.)

The Colts are expected to have at least $44 million in cap room.

If the Chiefs can?t collect wins, they can at least collect art.

Broncos FB Jacob Hester is very happy to be in Denver.

Get to know Chargers coach Mike McCoy.

Former Raiders are helping to promote sleep apnea awareness.? (Current Raiders are doing their best to help cure it.)

The Eagles have promoted Chris Peduzzi to the position of Head Athletic Trainer; he arrived in 1999, Andy Reid?s first year in Philly.

Could DL Chris Canty be a fit in the Cowboys? new 4-3 defense?

The push to change the Redskins? name continues.

The Giants gave DL Shaun Rogers a one-year, $1.005 million contract, which drops to $433,000 if he lands on injured reserve, again.

The Packers have urged fans to support a cheerleader who has been taunted and bullied on a Chicago Bears Facebook fan page.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz doesn?t think his team is rebuilding, but ?reloading.?? (Which some Lions could be tempted to take too literally this offseason.)

Newly-signed Bears S Tom Nelson was a Bears fan growing up.? (The question is whether he?ll still be a Bears fan after they cut him.)

The Vikings will include women, minorities, and veterans in the construction of their new stadium.

The deal between Charlotte and the Panthers got a boost when Altanta?s mayor addressed the Charlotte City Council.

The Falcons set the record for the fewest accepted penalties and fewest penalty yards in a 16-game season.

To get back to the Super Bowl, the Saints may want to consider raiding this year?s Super Bowl teams.

Could the Buccaneers target TE Martellus Bennett?

Cardinals special-teams coordinator Amos Jones has a simple philosophy:? ?They?re our guys and we?re going to make ?em our guys.? We?re going to coach ?em up, love ?em up and expect big plays out of ?em.?

Rams linebackers coach Frank Bush got a special surprise for his 50th birthday ? the Titans fired him.

Before Marshawn Lynch and Shaun Alexander, Chris Warren was moving the chains for the Seahawks.

For $375, fans can put a message on a brick at the new 49ers stadium.? (Surely, a few Seahawks fans will be inclined to buy bricks with the inscription, ?49ers suck.?? Or at a minimum, ?What?s your deal??)
