Panel: Making it Work? Successful Women in ... - Film Festival reViews

Women have played an integral part in the filmmaking industry from the early cinema days to over a century in today?s world of film biz, and while the celluloid ceiling stays firmly in place, there are spotlights on those that manage to break through. This panel of women from various ends of the business, both above and below the line, speak out on the trends and making it work.

Film Screening begins at 11 a.m. followed by panel discussion and Q&A?International WIFTI 2012 Showcase is 85 minutes and includes films from U.S. (Oregon, Atlantal, DC, LA, New Mexico) New Zealand, India, Vancouver and Atlantic Provinces and UK. This international showcase of films has garnered praise from local media and has been shown in over 40 countries.

Panelists Bios:
Kristi Zea, recipient of NYWiFT Muse Awards 2004, is a multi-faceted filmmaker who is not only a successful and well-respected production designer, but also a director, an award-winning film producer, and costume designer. She has been both production designer and second unit director on Beloved, Sleepers, Philadelphia, and The Silence of the Lambs. Zea made her directorial debut on HBO?s Domestic Dilemma. Part of the Men and Women 2 series, the film received a Cable ACE Award nomination. Her production design credits include The Super, Lorenzo?s Oil, Goodfellas, Miss Firecracker, New York Stories, Married to the Mob, and The Family Man. She began her career as a fashion stylist, going on to design costumes for feature films ? Silverado, Birdy, Terms of Endearment, Unfaithfully Yours, Shoot the Moon, Endless Love, and Fame. Zea was associate producer of?Lucas and Broadcast News and produced As Good As It Gets, which received an Academy Award? nomination for Best Picture, Golden Globe Award, and Producers Guild nomination. She has also worked with directors Roger Mitchell (Changing Lanes) and Brett Ratner (Red Dragon). Zea directed the DVD of singer/songwriter Annie Lennox?s most recent world concert tour, as well as the visual accompaniment DVD to Lennox?s latest album, Bare.

Amy Ferris is an author, screenwriter, playwright. Her most recent memoir, Marrying George Clooney has become an Off-Broadway play. She has written film Mr. Wonderful (Anthony Minghella, Director), and Funny Valentines (Julie Dash, Director). She has written for TV, and was nominated for Best Screenplay for Funny Valentines. She is also an editor; her first foray into editing was co-creating and founding the very first issue of Living Buddhism?s Magazines All Women?s Issue Magazine. ?She went on to be Guest Editor-in-Chief at both Milford Magazine and Urban Refugee. Amy is a champion of all things women.

Ingrid Price wanted to be an anthropologist, but accidentally earned a BFA in theater instead. She has worked in the entertainment industry since 1980, primarily as a costume designer for film and television. Her work may be seen on Nurse Jackie, Lights Out, the first eight seasons of Law & Order Criminal Intent; as well as on many other series, films, television movies, music videos, and plays. She is a member of IATSE locals 829 and 764. Her first screenplay died peacefully after being optioned twice. Her second screenplay, written with Davis Hall, became the short film; Mother?s House. She is a New York Women in Film and Television 2011 Designing Women honoree for her work as part of the Nurse Jackie wardrobe, hair and makeup team. Ingrid lives in New York.

Kimberly?Skyrme, began her film career as a casting director in Washington, D.C. and is the founder of Kimberly Skyrme Casting and continues as a casting director as well as producing feature films and television programming under Wonder Wheel Entertainment. She is board chairperson of Women in Film & Television International (WiFTI), boards of Women in Film & Video (WiFV), National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts (NCDA) and founding board member of Television Internet & Video Association (TIVA).

Melissa Silverstein is a writer, blogger and marketing consultant with an expertise in the area of social media regarding women and Hollywood. She is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. She is the Artistic Director and co-founder of the Athena Film Festival ? A Celebration of Women and Leadership at Barnard College in NYC. The third annual festival will take place from February 7-10, 2013.

Christina Kotlar, moderator founded Film Festival reViews in 2006, a podcast and blog site with views on and about independent films, filmmakers and the film industry in and around the film festival circuit worldwide with an eye out for women-centric films and filmmakers. An advocate for media literacy in schools, Christina is a member of Fort Lee Film Commission and was for several years festival director for the Jersey Filmmakers of Tomorrow and host and moderater for REEL Jersey Girls: Women in Film panels and symposiums, programmer of Women in Film History Month and hosted a weekly Fort Lee Library Film series. She is communications chair for Women in Film & Television International (WIFTI), contributing blogger for doddleNEWS online and cohost of herFlix, an online film programming and reviews from a women?s perspective.
