Perhaps Lucy Cornwell should always stay up late before a major golf tournament.

"I had homecoming last night, so I didn't get that much sleep," the Regina sophomore said after taking medalist honors with an 83 at the Macomb County Girls Golf Invitational Monday at Burning Tree Golf Club in Macomb Township.

"I just tried to keep my head in the right places and not get distracted, not let my tiredness take away from my golf game."

In a way, being tired might have helped.

"I'm so tired, I didn't think too much," she said with a smile. "I didn't put too much thought in every shot."

Cornwell, who had four birdies, might have found a second wind on the back nine.

"The whole back nine was what kept me in it," she said.

One of her key holes was the 18th.

"I thought I went into the water, but I chipped on (the green) and one-putted for a par," she said.

The 83 was one stroke off her previous best round of the season.

Cornwell's trip to the pinnacle of high school girls golf in Macomb County started several years ago.

"My parents got me started through a program at Golf Country in Port Huron-Marysville when I was in third grade," she said.

"I really liked it and I've done tournaments every year through the Blue Water Junior Golf Association."

Cornwell's closest competition came from Kendall Graves, also a sophomore at Regina. Graves finished two strokes back with an 85 and the pair led the Saddlelites to the team championship.

"I was doing real well at first, then I let a couple things get to me, but I tried to recover and shoot under 90," Graves said. "I just needed to take some pressure off, control myself and my clubs and where I hit the ball."

Graves, who shot a 79 last week in a tournament at Bald Mountain, said the Burning Tree course fit her game perfectly.

"It wasn't hilly, which is good for me," she said. "The course was good today. It was cold in the morning but it wound up being pretty nice. There are a lot of doglegs and my distance judgment was a little off at times."
