EU, South African leaders talk trade in Brussels

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Leaders of the European Union and South Africa are discussing deepening trade ties and ending the violence in Syria at a summit in Brussels.

South Africa has good relations with Russia and China ? two countries seen as key to efforts to ending the Syrian civil war.

Also on the agenda are the global economy and climate change, an EU official said. The official, who demanded anonymity to discuss the agenda before the talks began, said South African President Jacob Zuma would also likely update EU officials on plans to contain the miners' strikes in his country.

The EU is represented by Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Counsel, and Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission. The three are expected to hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
