Heavy snowfall and extreme winds may threaten this weekend?s holiday travel as blizzard conditions sweep across the Midwest. Squaremouth, America?s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, warns travelers it is too late to buy travel insurance to cover cancellations due to weather.
?The recently issued blizzard warning is now considered a foreseen event,? says Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. ?Just like any other storm, no coverage would be provided for travelers who purchased travel insurance after the announcement.?
With the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy still looming, more travelers are questioning the need for weather coverage in travel insurance. Unfortunately, travel insurance is often an afterthought, and the concern for coverage only arises after something catastrophic happens.
Although it is too late to purchase coverage for the storm now, those who already have a policy in place may take advantage of the trip cancellation, missed connection, or travel delay benefits if their holiday travel plans are interrupted this weekend. However, travelers should remember that even if a policy includes weather coverage there are still stipulations to be aware of.
One thing to look out for is any time constraint related to the benefits. Travelers who are stuck at the airport or forced to book an unplanned overnight stay at a nearby hotel may be able to receive reimbursement for food, accommodations, and local transportation under the travel delay benefit. The delay must last for a specified amount of time, anywhere from 3 to 24 hours, before coverage becomes available.
Similarly, missed connection may provide reimbursement to travelers who need to catch up to a destination if they miss their connecting flight because of bad weather. In order to have coverage under this benefit, the delay would need to last anywhere from three to eight hours, depending on the policy.
?The only way to avoid having limited or no coverage in the future is to have a policy in place before a storm is identified on the weather map,? says Harvey. ?This time of year, the risk of winter storm interruptions is incredibly high.?
Because travel insurance policies define hurricane and weather benefits differently, Squaremouth advises travelers to review the terms of their policies to completely understand what is covered. Travelers who know their policy in detail and plan ahead have the best chance of ensuring holiday plans go as smoothly as possible.
