SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ ? Trident Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRID), a leading provider of set-top box and TV semiconductor solutions, today announced its new MAP-X? family of audio System-on-Chip (SoC) designed to deliver HD Audio and Internet connectivity for next generation home audio, AV receivers and sound bars. ?The seven members of the new MAP-X? audio family complement Trident?s innovative set-top box and digital TV solutions by enhancing the audio functionality in home audio products needed to create a realistic and immersive home entertainment experience.
The MAP-X? family targets the traditional home audio markets, including AV receivers and mini and micro-system components, as well as the fast-growing sound bar market. ?Originally designed as an add-on to home theater setups, sound bars are becoming a thriving and distinct home audio segment, according to an analysis by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)(1). ?Sound bars provide consumers with an option to improve audio quality and their listening experience, which is being diminished due to the limitations on speaker driver sizes imposed by the space constraints associated with today?s increasingly thin profile flat panel TVs.
?Trident?s goal is to deliver innovative, fully integrated audio SoC solutions to the home audio market, and the MAP-X? family is integral to achieving this goal,? said Dirk Wieberneit, Vice President and General Manager of Trident?s TV Business Unit . ??We revolutionized television picture quality with our industry-renowned ME/MC technology and now our new audio products complete the home listening experience by delivering a truly cinematic and immersive sound experience via MAP-X? enabled devices.?
About the MAP-X Family
The MAP-X? family of products represents the first DSP audio SoC to integrate Internet radio and networked audio functionality, and is designed to enable consumers to stream their popular Internet radio stations from services such as vTuner? and others, as well as their own collection of music files via USB or from PC/NAS devices over a home network via DLNA. ?MAP-X? is the first SoC to offer a fully integrated solution that can decode HD Audio movie formats without the need for external SDRAM and also enable streaming audio functionality without having to add an expensive streaming audio or Internet radio module. ?In addition, the MAP-X? family integrates ADCs, DACs, and a digital transceiver into one SoC, compared to the typical three- to five-chip solution offered by competitors. ?By offering comprehensive functionality integration via an SoC approach, MAP-X? offers considerable BOM-cost savings over single function DSP ICs, and reduces the overall system design complexity. ?Software compatibility across all family members provides designers with flexibility to choose and add features across their entire product line, and to improve their time-to-market.
Availability
The MAP-X? family of audio SoCs are sampling today with production scheduled for December 2011. ?For information, interested parties should contact sales@tridentmicro.com.

JEFFERSON, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry said Thursday the health care bill GOP rival Mitt Romney enacted in Massachusetts paved the way for President Barack Obama's federal health law last year and cost the state jobs.
Perry's criticism was his sharpest yet of Romney, who led in national polls of Republican voters until Perry entered the race last month.
And it came in the wake of three days of heavy criticism by Romney of statements Perry has made about Social Security.
"I think it's important that we put as our nominee someone that does not blur the lines between President Obama and the Republican Party," Perry told about 200 Republican activists in Iowa, where the 2012 presidential nominating campaign begins this winter.
Perry said the Massachusetts health care plan Romney signed in 2006 contributed to the state's low rank in job growth during his one term as governor from 2003 to 2007.
Perry was referring to a study published by conservative Beacon Hill Institute at Suffolk University which stated that the Massachusetts program has cost the state thousands of jobs, raised health care costs and slowed income growth.
Perry promotes Texas' job growth as he campaigns for the GOP nomination, casting his efforts to reduce regulations and curb litigation as a model for the nation's lingering high unemployment. Texas has added more than 1 million jobs during Perry's decade as governor.
Jobs and the economy are a leading issue in the race for the GOP nomination, and Romney has touted his decades of work as a venture capitalist and investment company founder before serving as governor as expertise he could use as president to guide an economic recovery.
Since Perry's entry into the race, Romney has criticized the Texan for being too tied to the public sector at a time when a business-minded leader is needed as the nominee.
Perry's attack cuts directly at the niche in the race Romney has worked to create in his second bid for the nomination.
"The difference between me and President Obama are going to be very, very great," Perry said. "What we have done will serve as a blueprint for this country."
Romney has shifted his approach to Perry this month, criticizing instead his statements about Social Security, including that the federal retirement program should be dismantled and run by individual states. Romney raised the issue during a Republican candidates' debate in Florida on Monday, where Perry also faced criticism from rivals about his support for education benefits for children of illegal immigrants and an executive order he signed requiring school-age girls to be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted disease.
"Gov. Perry was clearly rattled by his poor debate performance in Tampa," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. "As a result, he is trying desperately to distract people from the very serious questions that were raised about his record."

Most developers looking at the North Loop area of Minneapolis these days are proposing apartment complexes. An unidentified developer has a different idea for a proposal billed as Project M: a 164-room hotel, a 400-space parking facility and an undefined ?entertainment complex.?
?Part of the attraction is certainly Target Field,? said project architect Brian Lubben of the Minnetonka-based Walker & Associates, referring to the nearby baseball stadium.
Project M Minneapolis LLC, an entity based in the Milwaukee area, recently closed on the purchase of 620 Olson Memorial Highway in Minneapolis. Project M paid $1.329 million for the site, according to a certificate of real estate value (CRV) filed last week with Hennepin County. A vacant building on the site was previously leased to the Velocity Express package delivery service. The property had previously been owned by Irish Twin Cities LLC, based in Oklahoma City.
Project M Minneapolis LLC is listed to a post office box in Delafield, Wis., a Milwaukee suburb. A phone call to the listed number for the LLC was not returned on Monday.
For many, the ?M? in Project M stands for ?mystery,? because many North Loop and real estate sources know little about the proposed project. Lubben declined to identify the developer.
?He just wants to remain anonymous for now,? Lubben said.
No development plans have been submitted to the city of Minneapolis. The cryptic-sounding moniker ?Project M? ? ?M? stands for Minneapolis ? is simply a working name for the proposal.
?That?s not the final name,? Lubben said.
The site is at the intersection of Olson Memorial Highway and Interstate 94. It is close to the so-called Farmers Market property being championed by some North Loop interests as a potential site for a new Minnesota Vikings football stadium.

Lubben said the size and potential use of the entertainment center has not been determined. Previous reports indicated that martial arts fighting would be held at the entertainment center. Lubben said that idea was discussed at one point but is no longer part of the plan.
?The martial arts thing is not a component that we?re looking at or considering,? Lubben said.
He said no decisions have been made about what type of entertainment would be featured: ?We?re really not sure yet ourselves.?
The North Loop area grew during the condo boom as former industrial sites made way for condo conversions and new construction. While downtown Minneapolis has about 6,800 hotel rooms, there is only one hotel in the North Loop area. The closest hotel to the Project M site is Marriott?s TownePlace Suites, an extended stay hotel at 525 Second St. N.
A few years ago, there was a hotel development boomlet in Minneapolis. But today, the only local hotel project under construction is the Radisson Blu, which will adjoin the Mall of America in Bloomington.
One local hotel expert said the climate for hotel development is challenging.
?To build a new hotel today, to get anything done, you better be a known entity and have your financing lined up,? said Paul Wischermann, president of the Minnetonka-based Wischermann Partners, a hospitality development and management consulting company. ?It?s very tough right now to get any new hotels done.?
Finance & Commerce has previously reported on a number of proposed apartment developments for the North Loop area that would add more than 1,000 units of housing to the neighborhood.
The recent deal for 620 Olson Memorial Highway included additional parcels of land at 622, 634 and 638 Seventh Ave. N. But Lubben said the developer hopes to close soon an adjacent property to assemble the full site planned for redevelopment. The proposal would then call for ?vacating? ? or closing ? the street, a one-block section of Seventh Avenue North that runs between the parcels.
Once the next transaction closes, Lubben said, more details about the proposal will begin to emerge.
?There?s another parcel there that?s intended to be part of the project site. We?ll work toward the submittal [to the city] after that,? Lubben said.
