Will scientists announce discovery of Higgs boson? Buzz is building. (+video)

Chatter suggesting that the Higgs boson ? the theoretical source of all mass ? has been found is mounting. But if that's true, the 'God particle' will raise questions of its own.

The definitive statement about what scientists involved in?two major experiments at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva?have found and their levels of confidence in the results comes early Wednesday morning. But one blog that has developed a reputation for reliable ? if unofficial ? analysis of forthcoming research has already predicted that scientists have found the long-sought particle.

In his blog, viXra Log, independent British physicist Philip Gibbs combined data from the two experiments at CERN as well as two experiments at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill. His analysis?"favors" the presence of some sort of Higgs particle.?

The discovery of the Higgs particle would be momentous because it would vindicate scientists who theorized that its existence would explain a core mystery of physics.?Three independent groups of physicists first proposed it in the 1960s to explain why fundamental particles ? the most basic building blocks of matter ? had?enormous differences in mass.

In particular, wondered why?electrons, which whiz around the nucleus of an atom, are ultralight, while quarks, which make up the protons and neutrons in the nucleus, are heavier.

The theorists' proposed answer was that the universe is permeated by a universal field that gives particles mass.?The amount of mass a particle takes on, then, depends on how strongly it interacts with this field, called the Higgs field.

But how would anyone know such a field exists? In quantum physics, fields have subatomic particles associated with them ? detected or hypothesized. The electromagnetic field has the photon, for instance. The Higgs field is predicted to have the Higgs boson.

Without Higgs, the so-called Standard Model of physics?is incomplete. The Standard Model describes the properties of the 16 particles ? including quarks and electrons ? that form the fundamental building blocks of the universe. It also explains three of the four forces that govern their interactions ? the strong force (which binds particles that make up atomic nuclei), the weak force (which governs radioactive decay), and electromagnetism. Gravity is the only force yet to be explained by the Standard Model.?

The discovery of the Higgs boson would be exciting, because it would fill one of these remaining gaps, says?Meenakshi Narain, a researcher at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and a member of one of the two teams at CERN that will report its results.?But, she adds, merely saying it's found would not answer the really interesting questions.

If the Higgs boson exists, Dr. Narain says, she wants to know how it decays.?

Theories suggest Higgs can exist only at the very high energies that existed right after the Big Bang,?the enormous release of energy that physicists credit for giving rise to the universe some 13.6 billion years ago. In fact, Higgs could have existed naturally only during the first millionth of a millionth of a second after the Big Bang. Then, it would have decayed into other particles as the universe cooled.

CERN's Large Hadron Collider can accelerate two beams of protons to nearly the speed of light before steering them into head-on collisions that generate energies?comparable to those earliest fractions of a second after the Big Bang. Detectors pick up the signatures of a shower of particles the collisions create, including particles that are the lower-energy byproducts of a Higgs boson's decay. By analyzing the debris, researchers can work backward to determine the types of particles that created it ? the approach they are using to identify the Higgs boson.

Currently, theories predict that the Higgs boson decays along five different paths at the same time, each producing its own unique mix of lower-energy particles. Each of the five blends of decay particles is thought to be present in specific proportions. But if any one of those proportions is off by a significant amount, it would send theorists back to the chalkboard, Narain explains.

"That's when, as a physicist, it gets really exciting," she says.

Indeed, blogger Dr. Gibbs's analysis yielded an odd outcome for one of these paths. He noted that the oddity could result from errors in the original measurements or in the approaches the various teams used to figure out ahead of time what a Higgs signature in the debris might look like.?

Teasing out the information on decay paths requires more data than the CERN teams have amassed so far, Narain adds.

But turning up the unexpected is something "I would very much like to happen," she says. "If we find it, I hope is is something non-standard."

Mexicans at polls talk of jobs, drug violence

Mexico's presidential election today is a choice between four candidates ? and not voting at all.?

By Sara Miller Llana / July 1, 2012

A man casts one of his ballots at a polling station in Atlacomulco, Mexico July 1. Mexico's more than 79 million voters went to the polls Sunday to elect a president, who will serve one six-year term, as well as 500 congressional deputies and 128 senators.

Jose Eduardo Salas is a young Mexican with a degree in mechanical engineering, no job, and few prospects, he says, so he is placing his vote in Mexico's presidential election today for Enrique Pe?a Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), who he says he believes holds Mexico's best hope for progress.

He, like millions of other Mexicans, are at the polls today to elect a leader for the next six years, one who will have to address a sputtering economy and a crime wave that has seen over 50,000 killed in drug-related violence in the past six years.

Polls leading up to the race have put Mr. Pe?a Nieto at the front of a pack of four, even though the PRI held a tight, authoritarian grip on Mexico for 71 years, until it was voted out of power in 2000.

But many Mexicans remained undecided leading up to the race, and many have also opted not to vote, currents present in Salas's own family.

His grandfather, Roberto Cienfuegos, accompanied his grandson and son to the station, with their 2-year-old Boxer Kikon, but stayed outside. He has no plans to vote.

?It doesn't make a difference,? says Mr. Cienfuegos, who voted for the leftist candidate in the 2006 race who is also running this year, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Mr. Lopez Obrador lost by less than a percentage point, declared fraud, and never accepted the results as many of his followers, including Cienfuegos.

His son, Juan Manuel Cienfuegos, did opt to vote ? though kept his pick private, as many Mexicans do ? but expressed deep skepticism that it will even make a difference. ?Crime and jobs are the most important problems,? says the small business owner. ?But no one is going to be able to solve either.?

Reports from around the country showed that voting was underway without any incidents of major violence. The polls are open until 6 p.m. local time and partial results are expected two hours later.

Pe?a Nieto's main rivals are Lopez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and Josefina Vazquez Mota of the right-leaning ruling party, the National Action Party (PAN). President Felipe Calderon is not running for re-election, as under the constitution presidents are barred from a second term.

Each of the candidates had clear supporters today when the Monitor asked voters what their preference was, except the fourth candidate Gabriel Quadri, the only candidate from outside the major parties: He is expected to figure in the low single-digits.

Here are profiles are the other three candidates, the policies that they are offering, and the baggage that their parties carry as election 2012 unfolds:

Enrique Pe?a Nieto

Backroom deals. Rigged elections. Pacts with drug lords.

Those are the accusations thrown at Mexico's?Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)?after 71 years in power, an era that Nobel laureate?Mario Vargas Llosa?dubbed the ?perfect dictatorship.?

Cop accused of sex in exchange for no arrest

By Mitch Weber, of NBC's kshb.com

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 13-year veteran of the Kansas City Police Department is behind bars after allegedly having sex with two women in exchange for not arresting them, NBC station kshb.com reported.

Officer Jeffrey Holmes turned himself in on Monday. He is facing two felony counts of acceding to corruption by a public servant.

When the investigation began in April, he was taken off patrol and moved into an administrative assignment.

When the second victim came forward in May, he was suspended with pay. Now that he?s been charged, he is suspended without pay.

According to court documents, the first victim who came forward said that Holmes raped her at the Extended Stay on 105th Street in Kansas City, Mo.

Read more from NBC station kshb.com

The woman told police that he threatened to bust her for prostitution if she didn't have sex with him. She said he was dressed in a uniform with a gun.

At first, the victim thought Holmes was a security guard -- until she recognized him when she went to South Patrol to file a police report that her car had been stolen.

The victim and a hotel clerk identified Holmes during a line-up.

The second victim who came forward told police that Holmes asked her if she was a prostitute, and then forced her to take him back to her room at the A-1 Motel on 87th Street.

'Very good day'
She told officers he threatened to arrest her for marijuana she had in the room if she didn't have sex with him. She said he was wearing a KCPD uniform at the time.

Jean Peters Baker, Jackson County prosecutor, said Holmes was off-duty when both incidents allegedly occurred.

"It's extremely disappointing and it's actually infuriating, but it's also [a] very good day when someone like that who wears the blue uniform and carried the badge no longer will,? Baker said. ?We don't want an individual like that in the department, and I know (Kansas City Police) Chief Fort? shares that opinion as well."

Baker said the women will not face any prostitution or drug charges.

"The conduct we are most concerned with here is a police officer who, in exchange for a benefit, got women to do things that he wouldn't have otherwise," she said.

Holmes is being held on a $25,000 bond.

Porn producers eyeing Google's Project Glass for POV films

Project Glass

Hey, you knew this was going to happen, right? The adage rings true: A tech product isn't really successful until the porn industry, erm, hops on it. And while Google's Project Glass -- that space-age monocle that shoots video as well as brings info to eyeball level -- won't be available publicly for a couple of years, the adult industry is already licking its chops over the, erm, practical value of Project Glass, particularly for point-of-view (aka POV) scenes.

Pink Visual's Quentin Boyer told PCMag that "a device that allows you to shoot high quality video in a truly hands-free fashion will make shooting POV porn that much easier." A spokesperson for MiKandi, which provides a sort of porn portal in the form of an Android app, told industry pub XBIZ "we're already dreaming up ways to use the glasses to get shots (sex-related and otherwise) that just aren't feasible using a traditional camera setup."

As for us? We're just hoping we don't end up seeing the point of view shots of the bottom of a Cheetos bag with all the nerds that'll be playing with this thing. Here's to the future.
